The new machine's network settings need to have the GATEWAY ip address set to the ip address of the router which will be something like 192.168.0.1 depending on the router you're using. If you can't see any networks available make sure the wireless connection isn't disabled. Look at NETWORK CONNECTIONS, wireless connection and see that it doesn't say disabled. If it is simply right click and select ENABLE.

Internet connetion wizard comes with Vista and XP and is found: Start > Control Panel > Network connections.

I am pretty sure eMachine computers don't have AOSS buttons. AOSS stands for "Airstation One-touch Secure System". The button would only be on a wireless router made by Buffalo. The button is used to initiate a secure connection between it and a computer.
Try running the Microsoft updates or getting updated drivers for your wireless NIC. It's even possible that the wireless card in the laptop doesn't support WPA security. Unlikely seeing as how the board is fairly new, but possible. You might also want to try getting a PCMCIA wireless card and popping that in.
If your router is near the desktop then you are best to use a wired connection to the router using a network patch cable. If it's farther and you want to use wireless then you would need to add a wireless adapter (USB or PCI) to the desktop. These are available for about $20.
