Hello,
This usually means your zoom lens is jammed and can not extend so the camera shuts off. You may have to get it serviced, but just try new batteries as the problem could be low power as well.

This type of problem can be caused by either a lens issue, or power problem. The following web blogs delineates things you can try to get the camera working again. They say about 50% of the time they can be fixed trying their suggestions:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
If none of those things helps, try these steps:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/11/simple-fix-for-dead-cameras-that-wont.html
If the camera still doesn't work, you can take it in to a local repair shop, but get an estimate first. Repair can be high, and justify just going ahead and buying a new one.
Good luck, and hope this helps.

Camera will not open up to take photos. Screen shows message "Please switch camera off and on again". Nothing happens! To the best of my knowledge i have not dropped or damaged the camera in any...

Then try to put off all of the batteries and the memory card, wait for a while then put them in again properly (make sure that the batteries already fully charged). Push the ON button gently, for one or two second, and see if the problem solved or not.

Hope this help. (^_^)

Quite regularly when I turn my new Coolpix S8000 on to take photos a message "memory card is write protected" appears on the screen & the camera won't operate. If I turn the camera...

on the side of the card you have a little button and it has 2 position : lock and free. if the button is on lock position that may be the problem! so please check it and put the button on free position and try again!

I have just downloaded the camera on to iphoto and have cleared the camera memory . I clicked the eject icon on iphoto and once cleared unplugged the USB download cable . I have just pushed the power...

Sounds like you did two things wrong...you deleted/erased/or formatted the camera using the computer. You disconnected the camera without using the "safely remove hardware" function.
