There are three types of storage on your handheld: the hard disk, an expansion card (if you have one), and the actual main system memory. Are you sure you have freed up the main system memory? That is the only one that counts in this case.
If it is filled with programs, move those programs to one of the other types of memory. This is easiest to do with a launcher like ZLauncher.
Your memory may be fragmented. Have you tried a soft reset?

The reason for not able to download messenger 9.0 may be that your computer virtual memory is low. You have to increase the virtual memory and try again. Note you have enough virtual memory, it might be technical problem.
