I assume you are using this configuration to connect a phone and not data outlet.
The RJ11 connector is used for phones and the RJ45 is used for data.
The CAT6 cable has 8 wires and to wire this cable to a RJ45 connector 2 wires on the CAT6 cable are not connected.

Go to this site for a wiring diagram for RJ11 to RJ45.

Phone is out

Lands phones...

Typically means NO RADIO involved
(POTS refers to "Plain Old TELEPHONE Service")...

A POPULAR (and much cheaper) alternative to
"twisted pair" hard wired telephone service... is the
newer PACKET phone service...

All these (here in the USA) typically include
a CUSTOMER "network interface ... Commonly
outside your house where the "phone wires" enter.

Your side of the box should have an RJ11 plug
inside. You can RELEASE the MODULAR wire
exactly as you do... inside of your house...

If properly wired.. YOUR ENTIRE HOUSE is
on the wire you just unplugged (TELCO is in the
RJ11 jack).

Plug in a GOOD working phone into that
connection...

If you still have NO-DIAL-TONE you have just
verified the trouble is OUTSIDE (no charge for repair)...

Please for BETTER trouble assistance...
IDENTIFY your "provider".

I cannot set up my answering machine on this model. Why

Hello Glenys Fisher,

No mind readers here...
(include MAKE & MODEL... pretty please).

ELSE... you get GENERIC answers

No idea if you are talking about Plain Old Telephone Service
(POTS)... or digital interface...

Even if "digital" f it has a RJ11 (phone jack)
should run an old style (central office powered phone
(the kind you want/need in an EMERGENCY)).

Only the center two wires (tip & ring (typically Green & Red))
are required. Key is always... Red = Right = RING.

If you are buying Off-The-Shelf (two wire) RJ11
phone cords the plugs are already properly oriented.

Line comes from the phone company (plugs directly
into answering machine)... Tel jack can go to a telephone
OR NOT.

All wiring is in PARALLEL.

If ANY phone is OFF-HOOK (in use) the recorder
will not work.

Is this helping...??

Well see Cat5 & Cat6 are different spec's and are wired differently...They have different wires inside the cable. You would be able to use the actual Wires, BUT they will have to be wired to the "Other" standard in the Outlet Jacks. Either that or get one that works on Cat6. http://www.connectworld.net/syscon/support.htm

I need the pinout for the Avaya 2400 series telephone headset RJ-11 Jack.

I noticed that Avaya headset is different from the Avaya handset or any other standard headset: The outer two pins are switched.

Avaya-Headset-pinning is like this:
Look to the RJ11 and turn it until you see leads from top and from front, then from left to right you look at
1) mic 5V
2) speak
3) speak
4) mic gnd

RJ11 of Avaya-handset and any standard headset/handset from the supermarket:
1) mic gnd
2) speak
3) speak
4) mic 5V

Hope that helps.

For the Mitel Superset 420, how to daisy chain phones? I see a jack on the back in the middle with what looks like an icon that means you can link it with another phone. Is that correct and what type of...

That Jack is for a Direct Station Selection/ Busy Lamp Field ( DSS/BLF ) connection not to daisy chain phones together. It is an RJ11 connection but uses a six conductor cord instead of a four conductor. Hope this answeres your question.

Modem connection

Your modem should have a RJ11 (phone) jack and a RJ45 (ethernet) jack. Phone line-in to modem RJ11. Ethernet cable from RJ45 to modem to router; maybe labeled WAN or modem port . Ethernet from any of the switch ports (or the only one avail, depending on your model) to you pc if it has a ethernet card in it. After that it's all up to the configuration.
