This could be a problem with the compressor.
When a compressor won't start and “clicks,” this indicates it (the compressor) is locked up and cannot start so it clicks off on an overload thermal (temperature) protector. If the compressor only runs for a short time then clicks off it is likely drawing too much amperage, overheating and cutting off on the overload protector. Nothing other than replacement can be done with a compressor that is locked up or drawing too much amperage as it is a problem with the internal components of the compressor.
It is absolutely crucial that the condenser coils are clean and the condenser fan motor, if there is one, operates properly or the compressor will overheat and go off on the overload protector. This handy
condenser brush makes cleaning your refrigerator condenser coils a snap.
The compressor can be replaced but this is very expensive ($400- $500 parts & labor) due to the fact that the refrigerant needs to be reclaimed from the system and the compressor refrigerant lines unsoldered, new lines soldered on and new refrigerant charged into the system. This is something only a trained and licensed repair person can do. Compressors are part of the "sealed refrigerant system", many manufacturers warranty the components of this system for an extended period of time, usually 5 years from the purchase date.
