Question about Palm LifeDrive Handheld
Is it necessary to have an antivirus installed? I go online with it quite often using wifi, and was wondering what the risk of viruses is.

I'm not aware of any viruses for PocketPC. You make it sound like simply browsing the web can get you a virus, which is a slight exaggeration: 1. Basic HTML and scripts have no ability to modify your local files. 2. Java applets (which actually don't work on most handhelds anyway) have VERY extensive security features designed to prevent the applets from doing anything malicious. 3. However, if you found some sort of vulnerability in the browser itself, you could theoretically exploit it. It seems to me that virtually every browser has some problems of this sort, but the "security experts" almost always find them before the evildoers do, and in many cases the vulnerabilities can cause a crash at worst, requiring only a soft reset. In the "olden days," I would always say that even if a virus completely wipes your Palm, all you have to do is restore it on your next HotSync - you DO HotSync regularly, right? However, devices like the LifeDrive complicate this somewhat, since I don't believe the LD automatically backs up anything on the hard disk. My point is that neither Palms nor PocketPCs have a significant risk of viruses for now. (Still no known viruses for Mac OS X either)

I do not believe there is a need for anti-virus. I am sure a poster much wiser than I can give you the reasons for this, but the end answer is a simple no.
