Sometimes, if that lens has heavy use or if it has been traveled with a lot, several of the internal zoom screws may come loose deep inside the lens and cause the zoom to freeze. It requires a complete disassembly of the lens to reach the screws and re-seal them so it does not happen again.

My Canon 17-85 IS F/4-5.6 IS USM zoom ring locked at 17mm. Any ideas how to fix it?

The most likely cause for this is faulty zoom guides within the lens. This will require complete disassembly to repair and can be done fairly inexpensively. However, it's not really a user serviceable problem and should be done by a qualified service technician.

Lens will not change aperture setting.. it's stuck on F4. Should be able to change to F2.8 Michael

You'll notice that the maximum aperture is specified as f/2.8-4.0. The lens has a maximum aperture of f/2.8 only at the 17mm focal length. At the 35mm focal length, the maximum aperture is f/4.

Does the lens open up to f/2.8 when you zoom out to 17mm?

I have a Tamron 28-200 lens for my Canon EOS 20D. My brother took it to Africa, and since it's return, the lens will no longer zoom out by turning the zooming ring. I spoke to another photographer who...

Some of the long tele's like that have some sort of locking mechanism on the side to prevent lens creep. Look for switches other than your aperature lock and auto focus/manual switch.

This is most likely a loose screw in the zoom mechanism but also the plastic parts may have broken. Follow the links at my pbase site the see the disassembly or take it to canon for a fix if your not up to it. http://www.pbase.com/barry_2718/efs1785mm

Zoom ring is loose and drops/slides on its own

Yes, this happens even when the lens is brand new. Some other lenses have a Zoom lock to prevent it. What I did was to slip a flat rubber band around the black area just behind the zoom ring, the area where there is s white mark or line, with the band ring just touching the zoom ring. The rubber band should be fairly tight, but not too tight. When the zoom ring revolves, the rubber band touching it gives it just enough friction to prevent it from turning. You can adjust it to give as much friction as you want. Hope this helps. Jay

17-85MM IS - mechanically stuck at 17mm - will not zoom -

Hi all,

I've had the same problem. So I decided to give it a try because I didn't find any solutions on the net. Unfortunately you have to pay pretty much for a Canon lens while the internal quality is pretty cheap, the whole mechanism is of plastic and this is also the problem. And after a while some screws will vibrate loose from the plastic components and canon could have done this better.

Probably within your lens is now one of the three zoom mechanism screws complete removed and you will notice that there is some abnormal movement in the zoom part. Unfortunately these screws are deeply mounted inside the lens and you need a lots of skill and patience to get it fixed.

First you need to completely disassemble the lens, and please make a picture of your lens after every step you make because I had to disassemble my lens 4 times! Because some of the elements was not right in place.

I will try to place a more complete description later today including some pictures.

Regards Gert

Zoom ring on 18-55 mm lens is locked/stuck

Are you sure it's the zoom ring that's stuck, and not the focus ring? The focus ring doesn't move when the camera is in autofocus.
If it's indeed the zoom ring that's stuck, you can spend more money than the lens is worth in repairs, or buy a replacement (circa 35 dollars on ebay) for dreadfully cheap. Good luck.
