I have a Ibm Thinkpad G40. It can´t read some discs but some discs it can read. It has a Toshiba DVD-rom SD C2612. Why can´t it read all discs? And how do I fix it?

Are some of the disks scratched on the bottom? Can you read those disks in another computer?

Could be a lot of reasons

  • Disc's were corrupted during burning (CRC errors, etc) ---Can't fix
  • Could be a blue ray disc ---Get a blue ray player
  • Disc is damaged (scratches or smudges on the disc surface) --Clean smudges or get a disc repair kit for scratches
  • Optical drive could be flaking out (going bad) ---Replace the optical drive

I have a IBM thinkpad that has a cd drive only. Is there a way to take out the cd drive and install a drive that is for cd's and dvd's. If so, how would I go about doing that and how much would it cost?

Hi, what it the model of your DVD? Please the correct driver here : www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/TPAD-MATRIX.html

Other tips : CD and DVD drive troubleshooting
  1. Verify the disc media used.
Try multiple original discs (not burned copies) which are clean and free of scratches. See Information about CD and DVD media.
Note: Dark colored discs such as black may be more difficult to read.

  2. Verify that the disc is seated properly in the CD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD drive.

  3. Verify that the drive is seated properly in the ThinkPad system by reseating the drive.
If another similar machine is available, then verify that the drive works in the other machine and that the other drive works in this machine.
    Notes:
    • The CD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD drives cannot be removed in ThinkPad G40 and R50e systems.
    • Shut down, remove the power cord, and remove the battery from the ThinkPad system before removing the CD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD drive.

DVD not working

To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Toshiba cd-r/rw drive reads but doesnt write

I checked out the specs for that drive. It only reads dvds/cds.
I see that it has no cd/dvd writing capabilities.

All the cd's you used may still be blank

Do you have another drive you can try out?

Having a trouble with my DVD-ROM - IBM ThinkPad T42

Internal the pickup assy. (the laser) there are three components that read the discs, one for DVD one for CD and one for the DVD-ROM its likely that the DVD-ROM laser has gone out. Take the drive out and get the part number and look it up online on ebay or the like :-)
