As far as I know You have to have a Sony PC for those instructions to work. Since there are 14 million PCs out there, I can't know how to run yours.

Laptop not recognizing USB connection from HC20

I'm not sure why the camcorder is giving you an error message... but you should know that this "Burn VCD" thing is a pretty nasty hack from Sony.

This will only work in conjunction with the Sony "Picture Package" software.. you have to have that running and properly set up for the video transfer via USB to work. And if it does work, the quality will be horrible -- 1/4 the resolution of you DV images, and arguably worst than VHS tape.

For a real video transfer from any mini-DV camcorder, you need a Firewire connection (Sony calls this i.Link), and a video
capture utility (Windows Movie Maker will work, that's included with most versions of Windows these days). A good video package will allow you to convert the DV footage into DVD, which maintains the quality of the DV camcorder's native format.

convert my video images to "PICTURE PACKAGE software" this is for still photos. If you want video you need a firewire cable and a fire card for your PC. WinDV is free program that will help as will the info in the link. John

How to use pass through with Sony DCR HC 40 and Mac iMovie?

If it will work, the only tip is to leave the tape out of the Sony when trying passthrough.
