Try re-installing the drivers, or check that the scanner is connected to correct port on the PC

SOURCE: EPSON V700 Photo Scanner

Unplug the power supply from the power port on the scanner then plug it back in after a few seconds and power-up if it isn't already on. This happens to me a lot and this works every time. Frustrating though.

SOURCE: cannot communicate with scanner

Yep - I had the same problem. The issue is the cheap USB wire provided by Epson. It's too thin and isn't very well shielded. Use another one and you should be fine (or try keeping the wire away from other wires/sockets).

Hope that helps. :)

I have silver crest slide and negative scanner, when I try to open it on my MacBook pro i get the message no scanner connected although it is connected

I can think of two possible issues. Assuming that the USB ports work on the MacBook Pro with other devices, try a new USB cable. It's a basic USB 2.0 A to micro-b cable. (See https://www.cablestogo.com/learning/connector-guides/usb#USBMicroB for the shape.) Two:
the scanner driver is not compatible with the version of the Mac OS version on your Mac Pro. The OS compatibility list for the Silvercrest SND 3600 C2 is for Mac OSX 10.6-10.11 is available here: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1395182/Silvercrest-Snd-3600-C2.html?page=83#manual . The D3 version works with Mac OSX 10.6 and higher.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with the full model number of the slide and negative scanner and OS version on your MacBook Pro.

(By the way, if you are using a USB A (F) to USB C (M) adapter or a USB hub, that could be another source of communication failure between the scanner and the MacBook Pro. Try a direct connection or a different adapter.)

My Canon MP480 can print fine but when it comes to scanning it says, "Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turnd off. Check status. Scanner driver will be...

I had the printer working fine till sometime, and then either a driver upgrade or a OS upgrade over time caused the scanner to stop working. Tried reinstalling the drivers to no avail. However, sticking a usb drive on the printer's usb port, as opposed to using a usb cable by-passes any issues with the drivers or the OS, and just worked great.

I have been using this canoscan Lide 60 for 2 years, everything was fine. but suddenly didn't work recently and told me "cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner maybe...

Not a solution, but a confirmation. My Canoscan Lide 60 is no longer recognized by the system. It seems as though it does not power up. It gets its power from the USB interface. There is no "on" switch. Are there diagnostic tools available?

250 error on documate 510 xerox

Symptom: When scanning you receive an error 250. Cause: This problem can be caused by several different things but is often a driver or communication problem. Solution: Here are several solutions that can resolve this problem:

Solution 1 - Check for communication problems

Using any of the following can cause communication errors:
  • USB hubs
  • Docking stations
  • USB extension cables
  • USB cables longer than 6'
  • Connecting the scanner to one of the computers front USB ports (desktop computer only)
Connect the scanner directly to a USB port on the back of the computer (or side for notebook computers) using a 6 foot or shorter cable.

If you still receive the same error message, try a different USB cable.

Solution 2 - Redetect the scanner with Hidden Devices

Windows Vista, XP and 2000 users
  1. Disconnect the power and USB cable from the scanner.
  2. Click here and select "Run" or "Open".
  3. The Windows Device Manager will open.
    • Click on the "View" menu then select "Show hidden devices".
  4. Click the "+" next to "Imaging Devices". This will show all Imaging Devices previously and currently connected to the computer.
  5. Right-click on the Visioneer or Xerox scanner name and left click on "Uninstall".
  6. If the scanner is listed more than one time, uninstall ALL occurrences of the scanner.
  7. IF you see "?Other Devices" in the device manager list, click on the "+" to view the list of Other Devices.
  8. Right click then left click on "Uninstall" for each occurrence of the scanner. The scanner may be listed as any of the following:
    • USB Scanner
    • USB Device
    • Unknown Device
    • 1200 DPI Scanner
    • (Your Scanner Model)
    • (any other scanners or cameras listed here that you no longer use)
  9. Click the "+" next to "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".
  10. Right-click every listing of "Unknown Device" and select uninstall.
  11. Once all instances have been removed from device manager, reconnect the power and USB.
Windows Me and 98 users
  1. Right-click on the "My Computer" icon on your Windows Desktop
  2. Select "Properties" from the list
  3. Click on the "Device Manager" tab
  4. Find "Imaging Devices" and click on the plus (+) next to it to expand the list
  5. Select your scanner, then click on the "Remove" button
  6. IF you see "?Other Devices", click on the plus (+) next to it to expand the list
  7. Select your scanner then click on the "Remove"; button – your scanner may be listed as any of the following:
    • USB Scanner
    • USB Device
    • Unknown Device
    • 1200dpi Scanner
    • (your scanner model)
  8. Close the Device Manager
  9. Unplug the scanner from the computer and from the power
  10. Plug the scanner back in to the computer and power
Solution 3 - Check for power problems

If the power for the scanner is plugged into a surge protector, battery backup (UPS), or extension cord, plug the scanner directly to the wall.

Solution 4 - Check for conflict with other devices

This error can also be caused by a conflict with another USB device.
  1. Disconnect all USB device from the computer (including the scanner), except for you keyboard and/or mouse
  2. Turn the scanner off
  3. Restart the computer
  4. Once the computer has fully restarted, reconnect and power on the scanner
  5. If the scanner works properly at this time, it means there is a conflict with another device on the computer
  6. It may help to isolate the two items by connecting one of them to a USB add-in card
Solution 5 - Test the scanner on a different computer

If possible, you should try the scanner on a different computer. If the scanner works correctly on a different computer, then the problem is environmental and may be related to your chipset. See solution 6 below.

Solution 6 - Check the computer's chipset

This problem can also be caused by the computer's chipset. To check the chipset:

  1. Vista, XP and 2000 users: Click here and select "Run" or "Open".
ME and 98 users: Right click on 'My Computer', select 'Properties' then click the 'Device Manager' tab.
  2. The Windows Device Manager will open.
  3. Click on the plus (+) next to 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'.
  4. This list will include your computer's chipset.

  5. The follow chipsets are known to have communication problems:
    • SiS 7001
    • VIA Rev. 5 or later
    • Open HCD
    • ALi
  6. If your chipset is one of those listed above or it is only listed as 'Standard', you can try updating the chipset drivers.
    • Contact your computer's manufacturer for more information.
  7. If the problem persists, you may need to use a USB add-in card.
    • This is a PCI card that will add more USB ports to your computer.
  8. For more information about USB chipset issues, see www.usbman.com.

Cannot communicate with scanner (Canoscan Lide60 on Mac OSX 10.5)

I also had this problem and scoured ALL the apple forums to no avail.
Then I discovered what my problem was. I run parallels on my mac and it had nabbed my scanner as one of its USB devices! All I had to do was uncheck this device for use in the windows Virtual machine and it came back to mac. The strange thing was, I didn't use or install the scanner in the windows environment, yet parallels stole it from the macOS side.
If you have Parallels installed, I wonder how many other problems with USB connected devices could be solved by visiting it first?

CX4800 ''communication error'' with MAC OS X

I had the same problem. I think it's about how much power the printer draws from the usb port. I would suggest the following:
Plug the printer directly into the back of your mac, not into the keyboard or front ports. These ports have the most power and so should give you a trouble free connection.
If this doesn't work (and this is what I ended up having to do). Get as short a usb cable as you can to link between the mac and the printer. I found longer leads constantly caused problems with this printer wherever I plugged it in. This fixed it for me. It means they have to live very closely together but at least I don't want to throw the printer out of the window anymore!
I'm not sure who the fault lies with, Apple for providing underpowered ports or Epson for demanding too much power from the usb (it's not like the the thing needs the mac to power it up!). Probably a bit of both.

All in One Scanner/Printer problems

Go to this link and type "cannot communicate with scanner" in the search box. Click Search. Then select the "ERROR: Cannot communicate with scanner" link. You will see several things to try to correct your problem. Usually, this error shows up if there is another USB device connected which prevents the computer from "seeing" the scanner, even though it can print without problem. So do try to disconnect any other USB device (except mouse or keyboard) and reboot the system.
