Janie, you didn't mention what brand BP Monitor you have. But, if you have a Walgreens - HoMedics Wrist Monitor, the E3 indicates Error determining measurement data. In which case you should measure again. This particular error can be caused by movement of the arm, hand or wrist during the testing function. So, remain very still and keep you arm/wrist at heart level until the testing is completed and the cuff deflates.
Hope this helped you. If you have the Model I listed above and this continues to occur, contact HoMedics Customer Support 800-466-3342
Since that BP Monitor has a 5 year warranty. Your best bet is to contact HoMedics (the manufacturer) Customer Support @ 800-456-3342. That's assuming you replaced the old batteries with new one's out of a in date package and all are placed properly.
Jean, I'll answer both your questions that you posted separately. The
change in sound you hear is caused by the monitor noting a change in how
it's reading you BP. The error message is probably directly related to
the change in sound. Errors are caused by several things:
The Cuff has been placed incorrectly. Cuff should be placed on the wrist, at least 1/2" above the heal of the hand.
Talking or movement of your wrist or arm during measurement. Measure again. Keep wrist steady during measurement.
Shaking of the wrist with Cuff on. Same as above.
Air circuit abnormality. Turn unit OFF and then Back ON and measure again
Inflation pressure exceeding 300mmHg. Switch the unit OFF and measure again.
Error determining measurement data. Wait 1 minute and measure again.
If you continue to have problems with the unit, it has a 5 year limited warranty ... Contact HoMedics Customer Support 800-466-3342.
Hope this helps answer your 2 questions and helps to solve the problem for you.
The next time you go to your doctor, take the wrist cuff monitor with you. As they always do, the nurse or doctor will check you vital signs. After they do that and they've told you what your blood pressure and pulse readings are, correctly place the cuff monitor on your wrist and check you BP and Pulse with it. Compare the reading from the cuff monitor to what your doctor got. If it's within a few points, it's no big deal. If it's way off, than there's a problem with the cuff.
Remember, whenever using a cuff monitor, always keep your wrist at heart level for the most accurate reading. Once it's activated, remain completely still and don't move your wrist, until it has finished cycling.
As an EMT, I have one these BP Monitors and have found it very reliable. However, it if is not applied correctly to the wrist, you can get false readings. Also, not having your arm/wrist at heart level could throw the reading off. If this happens again, switch arms and see if the readings are the same.
I'm also curious as to what the monitor showed your heart rate was? And was it regular or irregular?
This monitor is manufactured by Homedics for Walgreen and has a good warranty. If you still have concerns about it's accuracy, return it to Walgreens or follow the instructions in the Owners Manual about returning it to Homedics for repair of replacement.
Wrist blood pressure monitors must be used with the arm above heart level. You can do the pledge of allegiance while doing a reading to make sure this is done. Usually this error occurs when inflation takes too long or the placement of cuff is wrong.
