Your camera has 16 MB of internal storage and will accept up to 516 MB of external storage. It will not accept anything greater than an 516 MB card. 8GB is too large and the camera will not recognize it.
Buy a 516MB or smaller card and try it, they are very inexpensive.
The Hx 4700 series and the & The Hx2190 have a removable card Compact Flash or SD Card, if the information you want was stored on these you can buy a USB Card reader from woolies plug the SD or Compact flash into the card reader and plug it into the USB port of your PC or mac and it will be readable (no drivers needed). You may also be interested to know that there are updated ROMS available for this model to update the OS & the Office Apps + increase the max capacity of the storage cards that are recognized.
This probably means that your phone is running out of space to store information.
I would try to delete old sms/mms, emails, pictures, and other information that is no longer needed to free up some space for needed information. The phone also has a micro SD card slot that can house a micro SD card. I would check if there is one already in the phone, if not buy one and stick it in to expand your storage space.
Storage Media is just an USB stick or any type of memory stick (xd card, sd card, cf card, even micro sd is considered 'storage media') If you are trying to update and it is asking you to insert the firware with the storage media, you will have to put the files on a usb stick or any type of storage media and then insert the card in either the memory card slots (if you have a original 60/80g launch model), or use a memory card reader.

if you are using windows and attach your memory card via a card reader or camera it will be given a drive letter, go to my computer (or computer in vista) and look for the extra drive letter if you are unsure what letter it is, open one of them until you find your pictures, open your email and compose one as normal then click attach or add files, there should be something like browse folders or files, click that and look for the drive letter where the photos are and add them at will, copies of the pictures will then be pulled from the card onto your email. good luck
I just gave up one of these for other reasons. I stopped having memory problems when I purchased and inserted an SD card to store extra data on. When I first inserted it, it told me there wasn't enough memory to even load the driver for the SD card. I imagine you will have the same problem. I solved it by deleting a bunch of pictures and email and then doing a soft reset on the phone. Once I that was done, the SD card loaded and the email program automatically started saving attachments to the card instead of the internal memory. Make sure you set the options for pictures to save on the card if you use the camera.
