I am receiving the same error message related to the fingerprint reader as other forum memebers have encountered. The iPaq is brand new... original training worked fine. Then after a week or two the problem arose
"Failed to start background reading (status=5, error=-102, retCode=0).
Perform a normal reset and try again"
Repeated soft resets have little effect. The "fix" suggested on the forum related to the bioswipe file and removal of fingerprint and re-enrol has been tried. However the problem now arises when attempting to "re-train/enrol" the fingerprints.

Does the computer detect the fingerprint reader at all? If it shows up in 'device manager' with a yellow exclamation mark then you have a driver issue. In this case try reinstalling your fingerprint reader driver software. If your device is not being detected at all, try reinstalling your usb drivers from within 'device manager' then plugging your fingerprint reader in once again. If this doesn't solve your problem, you will need to have the reader tested as it is most likely faulty.

Before you can use the fingerprint reader, you must set up the fingerprint reader by registering your fingerprint with the Access Manager.
Set up the fingerprint reader
To set up the fingerprint reader to recognize a user, the user must have a logon account on the PC and the account must have a password. Multiple users can be registered for the fingerprint reader if each has their own user account.
In Windows, double-click the VeriSoft Access Manager icon in the notification area of the taskbar to open the My Identity window.
Alternately, click Start > All programs > Verisoft > My Identity .
Click Log On to open the VeriSoft Logon Wizard. Click Next to begin.
Enter the User's Windows password in the Password field on the Introduce Yourself page, and click Next .
If you have successfully logged on to Windows, click Finish to close the wizard.
Click Register Fingerprints on the My Identity window, to open the VeriSoft Logon Wizard. Click Next to begin.
Select a finger shown on the hand graphic, and then slowly swipe your finger across the sensor. One of the squares below the hand graphic will change color when the scan is accepted. A message displays if the scan is not accepted.
Swipe the same finger across the sensor again until all four squares change color, then clickNext to register the finger print.
If you need to start over during the fingerprint registration process, right-click the highlighted finger on the screen and then click Start Over .
If prompted to register a second fingerprint, click a different finger on the hand graphic, and then repeat steps 5 and 6.
After using the Registration Wizard to registered at least 2 fingers, click Finish .
To set up the fingerprint reader for a different Windows user, log on to Windows as that user and then repeat steps 1 through 8.
After registering your fingerprint you can log off and then use your registered fingers to log on to Windows.

"Ihad the same thing happen, and determined that you have to go back toan earlier version of the Authentec driver to make it work. I tried 4versions and the only one that works with DigitalPersona is 188.8.131.52,dated 2007-08-28. You can find it on the HP Website. It appears to beavailable in a number of Softpaqs, such as sp37815.exe, sp37812.exe andsp37920.exe. Maybe these different versions are meant for differentmodels, but they appear to be the same driver. There is a brand newdriver available from Windows Update, but it doesn't work. I hope thisworks for you.
To fix this issue go to device manager, then under personal identification devices, right click on the authentec fingerprint reader.
click on the driver tab, and click the roll back driver button...should fix the problem for you...I also tried EVERYTHING you guys mention but to no avail....this works!!!
If you turn data execution prevention off (cntrl panel, system, performance steeings buton then the DEP tab) it will work.
It is better to add only the programs (.exe) from the BIN folder of your C:\Program Files\DigitalPersona\bin folders since DEP is a good security measure against many types of attacks.
The single fact that Microsoft keeps that bug around can be seen as "you will never get security with Big Brother". It is really ugly and, as an electronic engineer I think Microsoft Monopoily as somethiung to do with NSA CIA MOSSAD and wars.
