Tip & How-To about Bose 3 2 1 GSX System

DVD PLAYER REPAIR (NO DISC ERROR)

Before you attempt to repair your DVD Player yourself, make sure that you have necessary tools and test instruments like philips screw drivers, multimeter, soldering iron, soldering lead, soldering pump, etc...

This is a DVD/MIDI Player with a "no disc error" upon loading any disc that played before...
Watch this VIDEO
First I've loaded it with disc and observe the movement of the optical lens and the spindle motor. First thing I've noticed that the spindle motor didn't oscillate upon spinning and it's spin slowly unlike the normal RPM...
I've suspected the spindle motor was already bad but still to be confirm...

Unscrew the disc holder plate from the assembly to keep away the magnet touching the spindle motor, this may affect the reading and spinning of the motor upon testing with the multimeter.

This is how it looks like after removing the disc plate holder in the assembly. Spindle motor is secured with 2 small screws in the lens assembly.
Pull-out the connectors from the main board to see the underside of the tray.

You may test the spindle motor with your multimeter set in resistance measurement (ohms X1) even connected to the small board.
Bad motor will read either less than 5ohms(shorted winding) or infinity (open winding) and will not spin.
Good motor will read more than 50 ohms(depends the size) and will spin upon testing. Watch this VIDEO.

Onced you've confirmed that the motor was already faulty, unscrew it from the lens assembly.

Replaced the spindle motor with new one. Before you install the new motor make sure that the clearance of the disc holder is the same as the old one. Compare first the clearance because if it is to high the optical lens will not read the disc same if it is to low....

After replacing the motor re-insert all the connectors to the main board.
I've load same disc which does not read a while ago and observe what will happen. Observe the disc and the sound oscillation from the spindle motor in this VIDEO.

Hope that the above information, pictures, and video will help you fixing your DVD player yourself.
Thanks for visiting Fixya.
Have a nice day!

I have a Philips HTS5550 home theater and i have found out that the dvd spindle spins a disc for a few seconds, then it stops and displays a "No disc error" on the screen. What is the solution to repa

First, make sure you're not trying to play a bad disc by testing with another factory-burned DVD. And ... please do not be insulted here ... be sure the labeled side is facing upward. If still the same, the laser is mot likely defective and you will not be able to repair that yourself.

Hi tcpascual,
If you have necessary tools and test instruments, know safety precaution in basic troubleshooting try the steps below to solve your problem.
Assuming that the disc is good.
1.Clean the lens. - Sometimes because of dust the lens can't read any disc. Try clean the lens by soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this.
2.Replace the ribbon - Check the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the disc. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser. If you've done the steps above and the symptoms still there then the next step requires you a little knowledge in soldering technique and reading the ohmmeter.
3.Check the motor - Check the motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test it using the ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.Good motor - reading should be fairly high and it will spin. Bad motor- reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin.
Hint : 50% of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.
If you confirmed that you have a defective motor then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is too far or too close.
If the above steps didn't cure the problem, high chance that your optical lens was faulty.

If you can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the symptom.

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!

No Power

IF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH A SOLDERING IRON THIS IS A VERY SIMPLE FIX, IT IS SIMPLY A MATTER OF FAILED CAPACITORS ON THE POWER SUPPLY COMPONENT BOARD.
USUALLY A PAIR OF THEM OR MAYBE 3, VERY SIMILAR TO THE SAME ISSUE WITH PHILIPS DVP-642 MODEL.
REMOVE THE TOP <WHICH YOU HAVE TO DO TO REMOVE THE DVD> AND YOU WILL SEE THE BULGED OUT CAPACITORS, THEY WILL PROBABLY HAVE GUNK ON TOP OF THEM.

A key system file has been deleted. Go to Philips website and attempt the firmware upgrade, but it probably will not work. You may have to replace this player.

Recovery Mode for Philips' GoGear
Open the Philips Device Manager (Start à All Programs à Philips Digital Audio Player à SAXXX à Philips Device Manager) and click on the “Repair” tab. Then click on the “Repair” button to start the repair process. Most of the time, when your player is in that state, the Device Manager will not recognize that your GoGear is plugged in. If this is the case: Disconnect the player from the PC, and make sure the mp3 player is turned off. Hold in the volume + button on the mp3 player, and reconnect the player to your pc while holding in the volume + button. Continue holding the volume + for 10-15 seconds until a "Found New Hardware Wizard" pops up. It should recover your device if there isn't anything internally wrong with the player. Warning: this procedure will result in your songs being erased off the player, so they will have to be reloaded.
