Disable XP Shutdown

There may be times when you want to make sure that XP can't be inadvertently shut down. You can use a Registry hack to disable the normal Shut Down. Run the Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. Create a new DWORD value named NoClose with a data value of 1. Exit the Registry and reboot in order for the change to take effect. You won't be able to shut down Windows in the normal manner from now on; you'll have to run Task Manager by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete or right-clicking on the Toolbar, choosing Task Manager, and then using the Task Manager's Shut Down menu to close Windows. If you want to reenable normal shutdowns, delete the NoClose value.

I work for a small business's IT Department. I imaged a brand new HP PB6560B laptop, 32bit, WinXP for a user and he has constant shutdown issues. when hits ShutDown, the screen freezes for a few minutes - then if goes to the shutdown screen it never gets past Windows is Shutting Down. hitting the restart button works fine. last issue was getting run time errors at shutdown, i was able to bypass that. any ideas on how to fix this issue?

IMHO, drop Windows and get a Mac - any Mac.

Acer Aspire AS 3410, OS - WIN XP, shut down not work.

that means the drivers which you had installed is not working properly. u need to download the drivers of audio video & NIC card . check out the site. support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.htm. make sure you have SP3 for XP.

If shutting down XP takes what seems to be an inordinate amount of time, here are a couple of steps you can take to speed up the shutdown process:

Don't have XP clear your paging file at shutdown. For security reasons, you can have XP clear your paging file (pagefile.sys) of its contents whenever you shut down. Your paging file is used to store temporary files and data, but when your system shuts down, information stays in the file. Some people prefer to have the paging file cleared at shutdown because sensitive information such as unencrypted passwords sometimes ends up in the file. However, clearing the paging file can slow shutdown times significantly, so if extreme security isn't a high priority, you might not want to clear it. To shut down XP without clearing your paging file, run the Registry Editor (click Start > Run, then type regedit in the Run box) and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
Change the value of ClearPageFileAtShutdown to 0. Close the Registry, and restart your computer. Whenever you turn off XP from now on, the paging file won't be cleared, and you should be able to shut down more quickly.

Note: Please be careful when editing the Registry; you can do a lot of damage here. Don't change or delete anything unless you know exactly what it is.

Windows shutting down

You should probably use something like CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) to clean up your temp files. Also, uninstall any old software or stuff you no longer use. Run a scan for viruses and/or malware to make sure you are not infected.
