Configure Wireless Zero Configuration to configure wireless connection on XP computer

Configure Wireless Zero Configuration to connect to wireless network on your wireless XP computer.

Below mentioned steps will help enable Wireless Zero Configuration on your XP computer and achieve wireless connectivity. These steps applies to your XP wireless computer (Desktops and laptops) with external or built in wireless cards.


Please perform the following steps on your wireless computer to enable WZC (Wireless Zero Configuration):

1. Right click on My Computer icon and go to Manage.
2. Go to Services then go to Service and Applications.
3. Double click on Wireless Zero Configuration.
4. Change the Start Up Type to Automatic and click on Apply
5. Click on Start and press OK to close the window.
6. Go to 'Control Panel', Click on Classic View in the left hand side menu and then open 'Network Connections'.
7. Right-click on the wireless Network Connection icon and select 'Properties'.
8. Go to the 'Wireless Networks' tab .
9. Check the option 'Use Windows to Configure this Wireless Connection' and click 'OK'.

Now please perform the following instructions to connect to the wireless network:

1. Go to 'Control Panel', Click on Classic View in the left hand side menu and then open 'Network Connections'.
2. Right-click on the wireless Network Connection icon and select 'Properties'.
3. Click on the 'wireless network' tab.
4. Under Preferred networks if you see any name in the list then highlight the name and click remove.Click OK.
5. Right-click on the wireless Network Connection icon and select 'View Available Networks'.
6. Look for the SSID (aka Network Name) of the Wireless router or access point.
7. Highlight the SSID from the list that you want to connect to.
8. Type the security Key here and click on the 'Connect' button. You should have successfully established a wireless network connection.

The above steps will help you in the configuration of wireless connectivity if you are not aware about the settings of wireless connection utility installed on the computer.

Wireless Zero configuration is a utility that connects your computer to a wireless network.

If Wireless Zero configuration is not enabled, the following message will appear: "Windows cannot configure this wireless connection."

Setup steps:

  1. Go to the XP Start menu and select Control Panel.

  5. Find Wireless Zero Configuration within the Services list.

hello im troubleshooting a error on a dell dimension 2400, windows xp error when testing or querying the modem the error reads cannot connect or check to see if hardware is powered on or connected properly. im trying to connect a usb modem from ATT&T which is also giving the same problem, I removed and all connected modems which was the factory dell pci broadcom, standard and at&t usb wireless devices and restarted pc and cannot get it to work? need help.
Wireless zero configuration is the feature of Windows XP that allows Windows to detect the available wireless networks and automatically connect to the most preferred wireless network.

It is enabled by the Wireless Zero Configuration service in Windows XP. It provides auto wireless network detection when you switch on the computer.
Follow the steps below to verify that the service is running:
1. Go to Start and right click My Computer. Select and click Manage.
2. Computer Management window will appear. Under Services and Applications, select Services.
3. Check for the service Wireless Zero Configuration. Make sure that it is started and that the startup type is set to automatic.

- The network adapter does not appear as a wireless network adapter in Network Connections. It appears as a LAN adapter, similar to an Ethernet connection.
- The properties of the wireless connection do not have a Wireless Networks tab.
- You do not receive a Windows XP notification bar message indicating that wireless networks are available.
To get the most out of your Windows XP wireless experience, you should contact wireless adapter manufacturer to obtain the latest version of the drivers that support this XP feature.
If not, you must manually configure wireless network settings using the configuration software supplied with the wireless network adapter.

Unable to use the wireless setup wizard - I am trying to connect my pc with my wireless printer. If the Wireless Zero Configuration service is not available, you receive an error message that directs you to this article. This behavior occurs for several reasons. Some computer and hardware manufacturers provide their own configuration software that replaces the Wireless Zero Configuration service that is provided in Windows. In that case, you must use the software that is provided by the manufacturer to configure your wireless network. If you want to use the Wireless Network Setup Wizard or the View Available Wireless Networks feature to configure your wireless device, see the documentation that came with your computer or with your wireless network card. Use this documentation to determine whether you can use the Wireless Zero Configuration service to configure your wireless network. Sometimes, you cannot use the Windows functionality.
If your computer or your wireless network adapter did not come with its own wireless network software, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. Click Network Connections.
  3. In Network Connections, click to select your wireless connection, and then clickChange settings of this connection.
  4. On the Wireless Networks tab, click to select the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box.

To start the Wireless Zero Configuration service, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s, and then click OK.
  2. Double-click Wireless Zero Configuration.
  3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.
  4. In the Service status area, click Start, and then click OK.
