Tip & How-To about Video Game Consoles & Games

Sony PS3 Not Reading Disks or Games

This is a very common problem on the Ps3 and is a strong indicator that the Bluray drive is malfunctioning. Usually this can be pinpointed to the laser lens within the drive which is failing to read information from the disk.

Sometimes this can be resolved by gently cleaning the lens with a Q-Tip and some isopropyl alcohol to simply remove dirt that may be impeding the laser from reading the disk but more than often the lens itself is faulty and will need replacing.

Pictures speak a thousand words so please see the videos below for an excellent video walk-through on how you can do this yourself.

Please be sure the console is disconnected from the mains supply before carrying out any of this type of work.

If you do not feel confident in doing this repair the unit will have to be returned to Sony who generally replace the whole drive unit including the lens. Total cost from Sony is $150 to make the repair.
