How to Choose Air Filter for Diesel Generator

The dust in the air is the primary reason on abrasion for cylinder liner, piston, piston ring, valves, valve stem guide and other athletic parts, the more the dust in the intake to the engine is the more the abrasion of the engine's parts is. It is founded by wearing test of engine that the dust less than a diameter 0.001 mm has an very small effect on engines, the dust with a diameter between 0.001 mm and 0.01 mm has measured effect on the engine if the diameter of the dust in the intake is larger than the thickness of the bearing oil film, it will affect the life of the main and connecting bearing and the piston ring. Therefore, to extend the service life of a diesel generator, it is very important that air filter should be chosen carefully.

According to different uses, air filter is divided into normal duty and heavy duty air filters. The minimum efficiency for normal duty cleaner at any flow between 15% and 100% at the rated air flow is 99.5%; and its minimum dust holding capability is 3.0 gram/CFM( or 6A gram/L.S) at rated air flow, it will be applied primarily to those generator drive engines and marine engines.

The minimum efficiency for heavy duty filter at any flow between 15% and 100% of the rated air flow is 99.9% and its minimum dust holding capability is 25.0 gram/CFW (or 53 gram/L.S) at rated air flow, it will be applied primarily to the mining product, construction product, automotive product, off-high heavy duty, etc. Those engines ( and generator drive engine) and marine engines ( and generator drives engines).



After the air cleaners have been used for period of time, its elements will be dirtied, and restriction of the air intake will increase. When the restriction increases to above 6.25kPa, the engine can not get sufficient air. Therefore, the engine will discharge the black smoke and the engine's power will be own.

The customer can estimate the air-logged conditions of the air filter by the air induction indicator or annunciator, if the indicating window of the indicator changes from green to red, or the annunciator gives an alarm, the air intake restriction had exceeded the limit valve, and the element will need to be cleaned up or replaced.

The following methods can be used to clean up the element of the air filter:

a. Lightly knock the end plate & the element to shake off the dust accumulating on the element;
b; Open the dust discharging jaws on the air cleaner to remove the dust in the air cleaner shell.
c. Open the end cover of the cleaner and pull out the element.
d. Clean up the element with the dry compressed air.

Note:

a. It is not permitted to clean up the element with oil or water.
b. For the heavy duty air filter, there are many convolution pipes, these pipes can not be taken down, and it can be washed up with hot alkaline water, flush it with cleanly water, then blow it with compressed air.
c. The secondary ( or safety) element of the heavy duty air cleaner can not be cleaned up.

When the following problems are founded, the primary element must be replaced with a new element.

a. The primary element is in disrepair.
b. After assembly the element, the indicator indicates red or the annunciator for gives an alarm again.

c. The primary element have boon cleaned up for five times.
Note: For heavy duty air filter, when its primary element is disrepair or cleaned up for five times, its secondary must be replaced.

Blue smoke indicates burning oil in the cylinders. Could be worn piston rings, worn valve guides, or bad valve stem seals. An engine compression test may help find it, but a cylinder leak-down test is a more precise way to find where compression is being lost. If compression is good, you just may need to replace the old rubber valve stem seals. A shop could do it without having to remove the cylinder head, using an air compressor hooked up into each cylinder while the valve train is being worked on. The air is used to keep the valves from falling into the cylinder while the seals are replaced. About a 4 hour labor cost, so expensive, but a lot less than a cylinder head removal.

Clogged PCV Valve
The main purpose of the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve is to recirculate blow-by gases back from the crankcase area through the engine to consume unburned hydrocarbons. Blow by is a mixture of air, gasoline and combustion gases forced past the rings on the combustion stroke. The PCV system usually has a tube leading from the crankcase to the carburetor or intake manifold. Vacuum within the engine intake manifold pulls blow by gases out of the crankcase into the combustion chamber along with the regular intake of air and fuel.
Worn Piston Ring Grooves
For piston rings to form a good seal, the sides of the ring grooves must be true and flat - not flared or shouldered - and the rings must have the correct side clearance in the grooves. Normally, automotive ring groove side clearance should not exceed .002-.004. As the pistons move up and down, the rings must seat on the sides of the grooves in very much the same way that valves must seat to prevent leakage. New rings in tapered or irregular grooves will not seal properly and, consequently, oil will pass around behind the rings into the combustion chamber. Worn grooves are usually flared or tapered causing increased side clearances which permit more than the normal amount of oil to pass the rings into the combustion chamber. Excessive side clearances also create a pounding effect by the rings on the sides of the piston grooves. This promotes piston groove wear and, if the condition is not corrected, breakage of rings lands may occur.
Cracked or Broken Ring Lands
Cracked or broken ring lands prevent the rings from seating completely on their sides and cause oil pumping by a process similar to that described in #7. In addition to this, they also lead to serious damage to the cylinders as well as complete destruction of the pistons and rings. Cracked or broken ring lands cannot be corrected by any means other than piston replacement and this should be done as soon as there is the slightest indication of a crack.
Worn Valve Stems and Guides
When wear has taken place on valve stems and valve guides, the vacuum in the intake manifold will draw oil and oil vapor between the intake valve stems and guides, into the intake manifold and then into the cylinder where it will be burned. If this condition is not corrected when new piston rings are installed, an engine is likely to use more oil than it did before because the new piston rings will increase the vacuum in the intake manifold. When gum or deposits on the valve stems are removed - a procedure recommended when overhauling an engine - the seal previously formed will be removed and leakage will be more pronounced. This is particularly true on overhead valve engines where loss of oil may occur on the exhaust valves as well as on the intake valves. High oil consumption caused by too much valve guide clearance can frequently be cured by reaming or nerraling the valve stem. In some cases new valves may also be required. Use of a permanently bonded valve stem seal will give added insurance against oil leakage on complete engine overhauls or on valve jobs. Large Oil Leaks Leaking valve cover gaskets, leaking crankshaft front and rear seals.

to change valveseals on 1999 4.2 v6 are they pressed on or can i air up cylinder and compress spring to change

  1. Remove the camshaft roller followers.
  2. Position the piston at the top of the stroke.
  3. Remove the spark plug and install compressed air in the cylinder to hold both valves in position. CAUTION: If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valve to fall into the cylinder. If air pressure must be removed, support the valve prior to removal.
  4. Use the Valve Spring Compressor to compress the valve springs.
  5. Remove the valve spring retainer keys, the valve spring retainers, and the valve spring.
  6. Using the Valve Stem Seal Replacer 303-383 (T91P-6571-A) remove the valve stem seals.

blowing black smoke on acceleration 2.5 exceed turbo intercooler I have a Mitsubishi 2.5 diesel with what sounds to be a similar problem except it happens when you rev the engine suddenly but stops smoking when you keep the engine at high revs. It recently blew a head gasket which has been lovingly replaced. Do you think this is also likely to be the Turbo Seals???
