Tip & How-To about Washing Machines

Stop A Leak

You really need to replace your washing machine every two years as they begin to break down inside and could errupt into a leak at anytime. Try buying the braided hoses as they are much stronger.Even if the hoses look good you need to change them along with new rubber washers.

Hi, I have a Asko W6221 washing machine. It is about 6 years old. Just recently it has started to leak water/washing detergent down the front of the machine, from the gap that is located underneath the detergent draw. It does this at the beginning of a wash cycle. At first I thought I was using too much powder or that it might of been the detergent/ powder that I was using. I have reduced and changed my powders / detergents and the problem still continues. What do you suggest?

Air-gap device -The air gap is a small device found on most washers that prevents the wash water from being siphoned into the household water supply. It's located either mid-way along or at the end of the black rubber hose that comes from the water-inlet valve. Often it's made of translucent plastic. If one of the air-gap components deforms or cracks, you may need to replace it.

The tube -There's a rubber tube that runs between the water-inlet valve and either the air-gap or the inlet spout. If it cracks or breaks, it can cause a leak.

Inlet spout -Most washers have a plastic spout near the top of the main clothes tub that directs the water into the tub. If the spout cracks or breaks free of its mounting, it can cause a leak.

Leaking water heater, the spout on the side is dripping water all over the basement floor.

You can try fixing this problem by putting a garden hose cap over end of valve.
Cap has a washer.
If leak is bad, you need to replace drain valve.

If the valve is brass, then drain water heater and put a wrench on valve and unscrew.
Buy replacement brass valve from plumbing supply or Lowes-HomeDepot

If the valve is plastic, then expect it to break off when trying to remove.
If it breaks off, then you can carefully drill out the stem, and then burn it out with a torch and use a 3/4" pipe nipple to try to cut a new thread.

If water heater will not drain ... put washing machine hose on water heater valve - run water hose between washing machine hose and outdoor spigot and turn on water for 10 seconds to break open clog inside water heater.

maytag A212 clothes washer, leaking on fill up.

Possibly Injector / Vacuum break unit has gone bad (mine started spilling water lately, 20 years old). Get a 216201 to replace in your vacuum break, or better (if the machine is older) replace everything from the water valve with a kit: SUB 206680 (INJECTOR HOSE KIT).

Quite easy to get to. Just open front panel (remove two screws at bottom, lift bottom of panel away from machine and swing out. Spring clips at top should release easily. Then remove two bolts that hold top cover down and lift top. Water injector/vacuum break will be at the rear left of the machine. Costs about $40 for the kit. Or $5 for the small rubber part (but I am replacing everything that is pressurized on my machine since it is 20yrs old). -- Kevin

how to pick a washing machine that wont break!

Hi there!

(I probably shouldn't say this)

I would reccommend a Bosch product.
Their build quality just seems better. Most of the parts are well thought-out, and not over-designed to be the thinnest and cheapest like other brands.

I would steer clear of "own brands" as these may be cheaper, but often lack durability.

I have had several Bosch appliances over the years. They are solid, dependable, and if spares are needed, they are always stocked. Not that I've actually needed any!

In in doubt - buy the simplest machine to do the job. You don't need 1001 sensors to tell you that you've put shirts in with towels. Just stick to a knob controller , or push button for temperature selection and there is less to go wrong.

Keep it simple.

Hope this helps. If it does, Please rate as Fixya!

Thanks.
