Tip & How-To about Tomtom GO 300 GPS Receiver

Save your TOMTOM

I can help some people who have problems with their TomTom but here is a tip for you to help yourself against future problems.

  • Backup your SD card to your PC.
  • Do this by removing the SD card from your TomTom. Insert it into an SD card reader conencted to your PC. Make a new folder on your PC called TomTom Backup. Then open that folder and copy all the files from your TomTom SD card into the TomTom Backup folder. Job done.
Data can be corrupted on SD cards and SD cards can easily be damaged. I you end up with a damaged card then at least you will have a backup of it on your PC. This can save you a lot of money as trying to get a TomTom going again without the software is very expensive.

good luck. homemender

Tom Tom is freezing

Hi, If you have a backup of the files ( either on your SD card or on some models like the 910 , the internal hard drive ) you can try formatting the media then copying the backup files over onto it. It's likely that files / data is corrupted on the SD card / hard drive and that is why your tomtom freezes. Anyone reading this , Backup your TomTom SD card or its hardrive to your PC , do it now as it can save a lot of pain later. if you don't have a backup already , try and make one now . it's also possible your SD card has become faulty but if you can get the files off it onto your PC then you have a chance of copying them over to a good card in order to cure your problem . If it's not a fault with the SD card then at least you have a copy of the files , meaning you can't make things any worse than they already are. Good luck.

TomTom 720

Hi Robert,

Well first let me say I am sorry to hear you had these problems. Now its unfortunate that again you have a problem that sounds from you description is corrupted data.
Theres not much can be done unless you have made a backup of your TomTom to your PC as theres no way to restore the data / files to working condition other than using a backup. So, if you don't have a backup then it looks like you need to return your TomTom to retailer once again.

Can I suggest for you and any other TomTom users reading this. If you do get an NEW or exchange unit , before using it for the first time, connect to your PC and perform a backup of the files contained on it or on any removable media ( SD card and similar on some TomTom models ) this way if theres any problems in the future a reinstall of the backup might produce a solution.

Good luck

tom tom one xl wont accept SD card with map on

If you have TomTom that have the slot for SD card, then it should accepted the SD card. The instruction for how to use the SD card is simple, but it is hidden in the TomTom Home, that's why it's difficult to find it. Below are the instruction how to use the SD card.

1. Format the SD card (FAT32) and do not stick the SD in the slot yet
2. Run Backup (connect TomTom device to computer)
3. Disconnect TomTom from computer and turn off
4. Slide the SD into the slot and connect TomTom back to computer (choose "yes")
5. In the TomTom Home menu, Choosen Backup & Restore >>> and choosen Restore

TomTom Home will add all applications to the SD card. So the internal memory still have the applications and the SD card also had the same applications. Everytime you slide the card in, TomTom will automatic detect and use it as its primary storage, if it not detect, you can go to the device menu and pick the device to connect to.
Whenver you take the SD card out, then TomTom will use its internal memory.

Hope this helpful
