Check the location of your drain, it might be installed in a ditch or smelly location. Install "P" trap in the drain pipe pipe to avoid the smell coming back into the drain.

If operation light is normal and timer light flashes twice, the error is:
Serial signal (reverse) error, at operation start up
Most likely a faulty outdoor controller PCB. Around $250 for new board plus labour.

You need to record how many times each light flashes before it pauses and then repeats. This indicates a specific error that a tech will be able to diagnose and directs them to the components that have failed.

If the operation button is flashing 8 times, the timer light should also flash 4 times in each sequence. This indicates a failure of the PFC circuit in the outdoor unit which basically means a faulty outdoor board and will have to be replaced.
If the operation light is flashing 8 times by itself, the indoor controller board may have a fault. You can normally test this by putting the mode on the remote to 'Fan' and checking that the controls otherwise work normally - louvers work as directed and fan speed changes correctly when selected on the remote.
Most likely the fault lies in the outdoor board but you should contact a tech to diagnose correctly.

Kelvin, the first step is to turn off the power to the outside unit. The indoor evaporator unit is fed off the outdoor unit. Let it off for 12 - 15 minutes and then turn it back on. This will reset the microprocessor to start up properly. If it does not, then you need to call a service tech to diagnose the problem. They can get phone help from the professionals in NJ - if in the USA.

An easy way to check the remote is to use a digital camera. Turn the camera on and point the remote at the lens. Look at the camera screen and press a button on the remote. If it is working, you should see the transmitter flash a purple/blue colour. This is not visible with the naked eye so you have to use a digital camera to see it. A phone camera works fine. If you see the transmitter flashing, the remote is probably ok and the receiver board or controller board in the head unit is faulty.

Check the capacitor. The top where the wires are attached should be flat. When a capacitor is bad this area will be puffed up Lightening strikes or power surges usually are the cause. A new one should cost 12 to 14 dollars. P S don;t let anyone sell you a new capacitor as part of an A/C service. If the motor runs the capacitor is good. A new one will fail for the same reason an old one would. Some shameless servicers charge as much as they think you can pay. One lady called and asked if I had a used capacitor Her service man wanted $800.00 for a new one. $25.00 is more than 100% mark up. and she did not need one.
