try searching for "create and format hard disk partitions" Open, and your disk is probably shown there as needing to be initialized or formatted. I suspect some compatibility issues are keeping Windows from seeing it. I have found that 2 or 3 years is the maximum time I use an external drive, as they go bad. I would try the drive in another computer, and if it sees it, copy all your data to a flash drive or a folder on that computer. Then format the drive, put your data back on and see if it is recognized on your computer. If not, go back to "create and format hard disk partitions" (after making sure you still have a copy of your data somewhere) and initialize or format or whatever it tells you to do. Then windows should recognize it, and you can put your data back on. But in the meantime I would be pricing new external drives.

Andrew, That Maxtor drive sounds like it has finally died on you and being just an 80 gig drive means its really old. The systems failure to read the drive as your booting up is what's causing the long boot delay as the system will see the controller board of the drive, but your spindle motor on that drive is most likely dead and there fore you will not be able to access or read any of your data stored on that drive. Hope you had backups of important files.

Try unplugging both the power and data cables from both the computer and the hard drive. Let the hard drive spin down. Plug the cables back in. It should become visible with no loss of files.

it should still detect even though your using vista does your bios setting have usb2 enabled?? otherwise try a different usb port

Try to restart your computer  and let the computer boot and detect that device you presently inserted.

The inpage error is generally the sign of a failing drive and usually the one you are clicking on when it pops up. It is indicative of recent or pending failure of the drive. This means it may not be accessible through normal means, however they can sometimes be repaired(cases such as having been powered down without ejecting).

If your's was unplugged while copying or before using the windows eject function, this is likely the case. If the drive letter is X open your start menu then:

XP/2000 Click Run, then type CHKDSK X: /F then click OK, restart the computer and let it run the consistency check.

Vista: Click into the searchbar and type CMD then hit enter, when the black and white command prompt window comes up type in CHKDSK X: /F then hit enter. Type EXIT then hit enter. Restart the computer and let it run the consistency check.

Either way, if it works and the drive is back copy the important files onto the computer as you should always have them in 2 places. If it does not work you will likely need the help of a pro getting the files back.

Remember, Backup drives are for keeping backups, in the future always keep everything in at east two places. Although I love my friendly neighborhood data recovery specialists, life is cheaper and less frustrating when we don't need their help.

Tell Rey Barcelo that the Installation software is on the hard disk
inside of his Maxtor OT Mini III 80 GB. There is no physical CD.
It's all on the hard drive inside of the device. I had my computer
expert look at it and now the device is working normally.
A lot of Kudos to you for steering me in that direction.

Couple of questions first: -What operating system was running on the new and old PC? -Is the old PC still running and available? Once you answer these we?ll start work.

I doubt they are still available but usually one can be found on the maxtor web site, (many years ago).

I assume it is a USB connection? Does it also have a power adaptor or a USB dongle that has 2 USB connectors? If you cannot get it to power up, the only other option to retrieve your data is to take the HD out of the case and connect it to a PC or laptop using a SSD or SATA to USB adapter and see if you can get the PC to recognize it.
