Try this quick step:

1. On your windows desktop. Open My Computer. On the drive where you encounter an error right click into it. example the dive C is the source of files to be copied.



2. Click Properties and this window appear on popup and click Tools




3. Click Error Checking and this popup appear, check the two checkbox shown and click OK



4. This dialogue box appear, then click OK, restart your PC and let the scandisk check your PC until it will continue loading to windows. Try copying again your file after checking if it works....

Look at the picture, I cannot memorize all hardisk jumper but almost all drives have label in it. where you put the jumper for the Cable Select, Master, Slave.

See picture below. Opposite pins has label on it to where you put the jumper.

You may have damaged the heads in the drive

are you sure this is the error code ca699178 ?click start control panel administrative tools computer management then select event viewer this may vary depending on what operating system you have

extend the events there you will see errors in red you will no what exactly what the error was and at what time it occured

you might be able work your way through the problem

I assume it is a USB connection? Does it also have a power adaptor or a USB dongle that has 2 USB connectors? If you cannot get it to power up, the only other option to retrieve your data is to take the HD out of the case and connect it to a PC or laptop using a SSD or SATA to USB adapter and see if you can get the PC to recognize it.

I doubt they are still available but usually one can be found on the maxtor web site, (many years ago).

I replace my hard drives after 2 or 3 years. Yours seems to have quit early, possibly the transformer is not working. If your external drive lights up, the electronics could be bad. At any rate, the bad news is it sounds like time for a new drive. I hope you have a backup of the contents.
