Craftsman 24 Hp 48" Deck Yard Tractor - Page 7 Questions & Answers
I have a 24 HP,
I had the same issue. When we investigated further it was found to be the bearing on the top of the mower plate. This becomes worn and fills with moisture, causing the mower shaft to become "tight" and also causing a bad vibration through the seat when trying to engage it.
Do your blades move freely or is it tight? if so could be the same issue.
I hope this Helps

The spark plug is most likely NOT getting spark. Is the wire connected to plug? If tractor was stored over the winter, who prepared the engine for storage? Some mechanics will take out plugs & spray some oil into cylinders to avoid any rusting in cylinder then the plug is replaced but NOT connected.
Maybe the plug needs looking at.

24 HP B&S ENGINE HAS
Usually a valve adjustment will remedy this problem. The compression release is built into the valve train. If the gap is too great, the compression release will not function properly and you will be trying to start the engine under full compression and the starter motor will not do that. Without knowing the model no. of the engine it is difficult to determine what the valve adjustment is for your application. You would be safe to set both at .004? You may want to contact a local dealer or Briggs website once you get the engine model no. to get the exact specs. I will say that in worse case scenarios, the compression link brakes on the camshaft and no matter how you adjust it, it's not going to help, but again that is rare. That problem of course involves replacing the camshaft. Hope this helps in some way.

Sounds like an internal engine failure. Take the spark plugs out and stick a screw driver in the the cylinders. Then turn the engine by hand, and see if the pistons move. My guess is one or both won't, but if they do then you'll need to do more testing like a compression test or leak down tests. You may even need a partial tear down to find the problem. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it is possible that it is repairable rather than having to purchase a whole engine.
What is the easiest way to remove the deck to
Your listing doesn't specify the model number of your tractor. But I found a users manual for a 24HP model 917.28936
here and perhaps this is yours, or similar.
This model uses a single mower drive belt (some tractors use two separate ones) and you do have to remove the mower deck to replace the belt. The procedure is in the manual. Hope that helps.
Auto Transmission slips
The drive belt is probably slipping. Thanks for asking and I hope this helps out. Please leave me 4 thumbs up.

Ensure the pto is in the full off position. This should be an electric switch, while sitting on the seat and the key switch in the "ON" position pop the pto button in & out a few times. You should hear a metallic ping when switching the button. If no ping then possible problem with switch or clutch under tractor on engine crank shaft. I've seen both go bad and I've even seen the clutches get hot enough to weld itself together if shut down like that. symptom will be like a seized up engine. Does the starter act like it is trying to turn the engine or just dead? If dead try above if starter tries to turn engine check the clutch.

Craftsman riding mower LT3000 blades won't engage/turn
Well, we wouldn't want to lose your little girl, but goats can be very lovable.
The problem could be it just needs lubricating. I'd first spray WD-40 on every part of that mecanism which moves, top to bottom, even inside the button on top and underneath the deck.
If that doesn't work, get back to me, please.
