Most times your looking at some sort of safety device that won't allow the engine to start.Especially after all the work you've done.Check for an electrical connection that would sense oil level, they are the most common and are designed to shut down the engine because of a low oil level. What it does is grounds out the ignition or spark output.I hunted around for something on your gen set but because of it's age there's nothing available. So this is all I can do for you.Last but not least, your local CAT heavy equipment dealer services your gen set.Hope this helps?

Go to the auto parts store and buy a "Battery Tender" solar powered, or get an electric trickle charger. Or install a battery disconnect for the period the unit is not in use; you can disconnect the battery.

a 10 year old genset with only 45hrs on it...sound like the carb may need replace. working with these rv units for 6+ years has taught me that you cannot clean one well enough to fix it. you will need a new carb. your local onan dealer can help. when new the warrenty makes known that 1hr per month under load will keep the carb clean and problem free. evaporating gas leaves deposits and eventualy plug fuel jets. no replacement parts are recommended. i've personaly worked on rv's with 200+ hous and no issues at all. hope this helps, good luck...
Converting the power to genertor
You should not have to switch between battery and generator, unless you are trying to use an inverter as well. Batteries are 12vdc, typically run lighting, water pump, furnace, fridge controls. Generator powers ac, microwave, television, and anything else that plugs into a 120vac wall outlet. Inverter may also run select loads, and possibly dedicated wall outlets, but not AC, fridge, or microwave (usually).
Most RVs / Motorhomes now have automatic transfer switches that will switch between the generator, shorepower, and possibly an inverter. Your coach is made during an era of transition from manual transfer switch (in form of heavy duty electrical outlet near shore power cord) and the automatic transfer switch.
There is no specific place where a transfer switch or generator receptacle are mounted on an RV. There are no rules or regulations tha cover this as far as I know. Your RV may also have an EMS (Energy Management System) that will control the transfer switch as well. EMS panels are typically located above the refrigerator or above driver / passenger seats in overhead compartment.
6.5 RV Onan generaotr wont kick in when loaded.
1. Does the generator stay running when you start it the first time?
2. What color is the housing on this generator? Try to get the model number and serial number.
If the genset is shutting down on the first try, then your probably not creating voltage. However, if this is an older unit then the genset may stay running although no voltage is created. Place a volt meter on the genset to check for output voltage.
