I've set up my Brother MFC-6490CW to try to scan to email but despite all my efforts it won't connect to gmail to send an email. I've used the settings defined in the google documentation (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13287&topic=12810) but it always fails to connect. I'm suspecting that the scanner doesn't support the SSL protocol. Has anyone gottent his to work?
Use SMTP relaying. Set up a computer with SMTP relaying. Go into the Remote Setup Program for your Brother MFC and select Setup Server. Use the IP address of that PC in the Server Settings and set Auth for SMTP to None. Worked great for me. This document can help you set it up on the relaying computer/server. http://www.lesolsoncompany.com/InstantKB20/Attachment17.aspx

wont work at all just says unable to print 36
"Machine Error 36" and "Unable to Print" are error messages indicating something physically making it impossible for the machine to work. Hopefully, you could find a stuck paper or parts of stuck paper by opening the different covers (front, back, paper trays etc), the problem should then be solved by removing the paper and rebooting your machine.
However, if this does not work or you're unable to find the stuck paper, you will need to have service on this unit, to open up the machine.

Just picked up the Brother MFC-7840W. Set it up on my wireless network and am printing with no problems. I'm using the convenient web interface to try and get the scan to email feature to work. Upon entering in all the smtp/pop3 server information (in this case, smtp.gmail.com and pop.gmail.com) it prompts me to send a test email (which I do) but then returns an error...
"Name resolution with DNS failed. It is possible that the e-mail server is not registered with DNS or the DNS configuration is incorrect. Please check the SMTP, POP3 and DNS names."
I'm connecting to a network with a wrt-54g router with DHCP. The auto configured DNS servers listed in the printer's network details check out... I'm PRETTY sure gmail is registered with DNS.
I'm outta ideas. Anybody else come up against this? Is there a way I can test the printers connection to the outside world?
Thanks!
I'm pretty sure that the problem (though the machine indicating otherwise) is that gmail requires SSL, and the Scan to Email (server) doesn't support SSL. If this is the problem, you can easily check it out by trying to use some other mail, with another SMTP server, which doesn't require SSL.

I tried changing cartridge but still it won't print black. Help!
If it's under warranty you're in luck, you need a new printhead,LK3197001, around $80.00. I just replaced one yesterday in the shop for the same problem. I would call Brother customer service and see if they'll help cover the cost.

My MFC 6490CW displays this message and will not accept any print jobs.
What is the problem?
Thanks
Usually that error means the encoder strip behind the carriage assembly is out of position or very dirty. Best to remove the top cover to correct, you might also find a scrap of paper either on the extreme right or left stopping the carriage from moving properly.

Brother MFC-6490CW printer error unable to print 36
Any of the 30 series errors say that the carriage is not free to move from side to side across the paper. You need to look close on each side of the machine where the carriage travels to see if there's a paper scrap stopping it. Also the encoder strip could be out of the slot in the carriage assembly. If all is OK you need a shop repair to determine if the logic or carriage pcb's are OK.

UNABLE TO CLEAN 50
Hi Good day!! try this method
- Machine off
- Switch on the machine while holding down the "menu"button until all the leds are flashing on/off. Now you are in "maintenance" mode.
- press 80
- press the "mono start" button several times until you see "purge: xxxx"
- press "2783" in order to reset the purge counter. You will see: "purge:0000"
- press "99" to exit the maintenance mode
Now you are able to print again, but actually your ink absorber box is now full with ink. Ink flooding can happen if you don't replace this ink box!
Don't forget to vote thanks!!!!

Brother MFC-6490CW not printing properly. Need a deep clean code please?
Hold down the menu key. While still holding the menu key, unplug the machine and plug it back in. Do not let go of the key until the machine reboots and the screen says "maintenence". Hit the following keys: 7, 6, 4,black start. The machine will then go into "power purge" or deep clean mode for about 5-7 minutes. When complete hit: 99 to get out of maintanence and reboot. Be sure to have extra ink cartidges on hand as it does use up a lot of ink but this process works the best every time when the printer wont print.

Only printing partial color. No better results after using built in cleaning so want to try cleaning the print heads to see if colors will come back.
I have had to take mine apart too. Nothing wrong with copy inks. If you can not be helpful dont bother doing an 'I told you so' you are not helping anyone just gloating at your snob values

UNABLE TO PRINT 44 - BROTHER MFC-J6510DW
User guide http://download.brother.com/welcome/doc002835/cv_mfc6710dw_use_busr_lx7144001_b.pdf says either a mechanical problem or could be foreign object like paper clip or torn paper inside the machine. Open the scanner cover to check for that.
