In most cases the printer driver software can have errors while being in use or is shut down. So to reset remove your printer from the PC and uninstall the printer software. Now reinstall the printer software and then connect the Printer ONLY WHEN PROMPTED, to be detected as a new hardware as it will be installed. Now check the printer properties to see the ink levels.
Activate head cleaning before a test is taken. Sometimes it is possible that the head is not reacting to the need of the PC command or can be an issue with ink drying or poor ink cartridge contacts. Sometimes the power supply unit must be checked as a poor SMPS unit can deliver low voltage and cause issues to the printer function. Check all the leads and connections of the mother board , the tags to the ink cartridge. Also check the mechanical settings of the ink cartridge , if jammed or tight remove motor and manually free the drive before it is set back.

The noise is made by one of the motors: either one from the paper feeder - it thinks that there is a paper in the way and tries to expel it - or the one for the printing head - it tries to move the head but it's blocked by something = mechanical failure, a reset procedure (there is no reset button) is useless .
Open the top of the printer and try to locate the fault: either find what is causing the rollers for the paper to spin uncontrollably (a roller might be out of position, a plastic gear might have slipped from its shaft) or see what is blocking the printing head. If nothing appears broken then the fault is with motors themselves, they are no longer controlled by the processor of the printer. Unfortunately this is terminal since it will be cheaper to buy a brand new printer than to replace the failed parts in this one.

First off does the scanner work when you hook up the printer directly to the computer?What kind of network environment are you using this in. You could hook it up directly to the computer and just leave the computer on and then use it as a networked device. Here are a couple of troubleshooting links that should help you. It sounds like you will need to have the print head replaced. Call Brother at 1-877-brother and tell them your prints are "missing the black ink on the pages", and Brother should cover the cost to repair this problem.

Ensure you have properly installed the communication between the printer and the hub and only then install the relevant software to windows. It appears that something has not properly being installed.

Check if you have the rollers loosen by looking if there's any detachable clips on the side or the hinge.
If there's nothing there try to use something where you can clip that paper out of the rollers.
Or if you can try moving the rollers see if it will roll the paper out of there.

Well, this is a common problem with people who purchase Brother printers, but do not always use Brother Ink Cartridges. Brother has a cleaning agent in the print cartridge and the compatibles do not.

"If you have a lack of one (or more) color do the following:

Make sure all carts are full, placed well and are secured. Insert a new ORIGINAL BROTHER CART for the one that shows no color.

Press menu then start bk-copy then four times arrow up quick after another. machine will switch into maintenance mode and all lights will flash. Press 7 then 6 then 4 then start bk-copy. machine will initialize the carts and refresh ink within tubes and print head. After that it does some power cleaning. When finished press 7 then 6 then 3 then start bk-copy. machine will run a power purge. when finished press 9 then 9 to leave the maintenance mode. do run a quality test print.

This should clean the lines out and clear up your issue.

You don't necessarily need your printer connected to your PC to install the driver. The driver installation is so that your PC can communicate with the specified printer. If you have the install CD you can install the driver and software. Now Depending on your printing machine, some installation CD's will ask you to please connect your Printer. If this is the case, there really is no way around that because the installation directions wont let you proceed to the next step without doing that.
Each printer and its installation software have different protocols. Some will let you install without the printer being connected, some wont.
