Weller 8200 Soldering Gun - Page 3 Questions & Answers
When i put the tips in my gun it just falls out
There should be two nuts (ldome shaped nuts) on the end of the tubes that have the holes in them where you are installing the tips. They need to be tightened with the wrench that is supplied with the gun. Let me know if this helps. Thanks
I have a couple of

Tip screws for model 8200
The tip screws are a drilled bolt for this unit. There isn't room to tap the barrel holes out further if the threads are bad. You used to be able to buy tips that were pre-loaded with the proper clamp bolts. Good luck!
Does not melt solder
The body contains a transformer, which steps your 120AC down to a lower voltage. The lower voltage runs THROUGH the tip, heating it up. Possibility ONE: Transformer is no good, throw it away. TWO: Not enough current is running through tip, because tip is corroded OR those mounting nuts are corroded, loose, OR somebody put new tip into nuts but neglected to bend both legs of new tip 90 degrees. Look at the barrels, you will see little holes in the sides, tip's legs go into those holes.
The light comes on. It does not heat up. The gun
The tip is probably dirty. Loosen up the screws on the side and pull the tip out. Clean them off by scraping them with a knife or with sandpaper. Put it back in and tighten the screws. It should work then. Sometimes it's just that the screws are loose.
Lights don't go no weller d550
I cannot see by the picture if you have one or two light bulb model, but if you have the 2 bulb, then you must know that these bulbs are in series so they both must be good and they have to be 1,5 volt bulbs each or you will get a very dull light. If it is a single bulb, then you need to check the screw-in socket and check the bulb with an ohm meter or continuity tester. iF ALL TESTS OK, THEN THE PROBLEM IS INTERNAL AND YOU WILL HAVE TO OPEN THE GUN OR JUST FORGET IT. GOODLUCK, MACGIVOR.
How do i solder together some headphone wires?
1- pull the trigger and melt some solder onto the tip then release the trigger.
2- hold all the wires together.
3- touch the tip to the wires and pull the trigger. when the solder on the tip melts again it will flow onto the wires
MY WELLER SOLDERING GUN IS GETTING HOT AND A
these are not worth repairing as the main part of a soldering iron is the transformer which is what causes the tip to get so hot, so if yours is giving off smoke and excessive heat probably the transformer is starting to cook itself which means it has to be replaced. I would guess that the transformer will cost you more then a replacement soldering gun on ebay would cost. Hope This Helps Don
Replacing tip
i have an old 8200 and i just bend the ends of the replacement tip, then i just tighten the bolts. that is how the tip was on the when i bought the 8200. cheers
Soldering gun troubleshoot
# Never touch the tip of the soldering gun.
They are very hot and will give you a nasty burn.
# Take great care to avoid touching the mains flex with the tip of the gun.
The gun should have a heatproof flex for extra protection. An ordinary plastic flex will melt immediately if touched by a hot gun and there is a serious risk of burns and electric shock.
# Always return the soldering gun to its stand when not in use.
Never put it down on your workbench, even for a moment!
# Work in a well-ventilated area.
The smoke formed as you melt solder is mostly from the flux and quite irritating. Avoid breathing it by keeping you head to the side of, not above, your work.
Weller tcp 1iron overheating
There is a bimetalic strip and a magnet that can get stuck in the closed position.
Tapping the iron on the end of the bit can release it otherwise a new element will be required.

Hi, I'm not sure the tip is defective. Check that the tip is screwed in tight. If it is not good and tight the tip will not get a good heat transfer from the solder wand. Hope this helps. If the wand will heat then the tip should.
