The temperature shows 126 degrees f
I got the same problem and just called and spoke to tech support for StaRite/Pentair. They said that is a simple one. The Thermister is the unit failing. It is located to the left of the water inlet to the heater and is stuck open and needs to be replaced. They said more than likely that is the issue. If not, then call them back. I was only on hold for less than 10 min.

Ref: Sta-Rite Max-E 400. Pool temp is about 75
Your temp sensor has gone bad and will need to be replaced. It's a small tube that slides into the water manifold and you can follow the wires back to the board. Just unplug and set a new one in place.

Your temp sensor has gone bad and is a small tube that goes into the water manifold. and you follow the wire back to the board. Just get a new one at your local store and slip it into place and plug the wires back in.
