Somewhere it has a dead short. Get it looked at ASAP and refrain from turning it on to test, as more damage will be done than you want to pay for.

Is this a gas powered compressor or electric motor. I'm thinking electric.

I would suggest contacting Master Tool Repair, great web site to get information on these little machines, I know you can get owner manuals from them that may contain wiring diagrams with them.

It could be a couple of things. To me it sounds like you have a short in the motor or damage to the cylinder and piston. You need special equipment in order to test the armature and field for a short. There may also be damage to the brushes and brush holder. There could also be a problem with the cylinder and piston. The bearing could be bad causing a hard start for the motor. I think it could be the combination of the two problems listed above. You may want to check the pump first and if that is not the problem it is an electrical short in your motor in which case you should buy a new compressor. It will cost more to fix if the motor is damage than to buy a new one. "BER" Beyond Economical Repair.

problem solved,bumped into a eletrician today and put me right on the matter. up and running. many thanks.

the springs in the switch box may be misadjusted, one starts it the other shuts it down.check to see if one looks overly tight.also check the small hose going from tank to switchbox for clogs

You can get a rebuild kit from DeWalt for about $40 and fix it yourself. The flappers are most likely bent.

Dont understand the question , does the engine shut off after p-max is met , or does it continue to run , if it continues to run then you have a pressure switch problem

I had the same problem. Replace the motor capacitor. small white cilinder part with two wire plugs conected to it. This will have a single bolt holding it to the frame casing, you will find it under the black plastic shroud that covers the motor. Take it into any electrical or compressor shop and they will check it for you. costs about $35.00.

couple of yrs worth of varnish in carb or filter now has hard time getting fuel fast enough for high rpm. try running some fuel cleaner if you dont feel like taking bowl off carb and cleaning jet.

The tank check valve is probably bad. Folow the large discharge line off the head, disconnecting one end of it. If you get air out of the line you have a bad check valve. If you don't get air you are probably looking at a valve job.

Its not getting fuel. There is a low oil shut off switch as well that go bad. most just bypass this unit. its connected to the on off switch as a 3rd leg. try that
if not check your fuel delivery. either the fuel line pet **** is closed/ clogged or a stuck needle in the carb is causing no fuel
