Could be the printhead is at the right margin. But, if you hit the return key and nothing happins, it could be a bad board, power supply or transport motor. When you turn the machine on, does the printhead move all the way to the left, spin the printwheel and move to a set position?
Smith Corona XD 6500
You might check the outlet to make sure there is 120V. Otherwise there is a good chance the power supply has burned out. Also the cover has to be down, and there has to be a ribbon mounted properly for this machine to work.
Lock switch stays on
The light goes on to indicate that the shift lock is engaged, so all letter type in upper case (capital) letters, or on machines with "spell check" to indicate a mis-spelled word. It should go out when you hit eithor left or right shift keys, correct the mis-spelled word or just continue typing.
If it just stays on all the time no matter what you do, there is a problem with the main board.
