check for a circuit breaker that is tripped, as well as a switch that enables 240volt (at the cost of 120 volt current being cut in half.). The switch puts the alternator windings in parallel (120volt full power) or series (240 volt @ half 120volt current).

  1. Check for any blown fuse and replace. It can be traced directly from the output lines.
  2. Check field excitation. The field excitation is supplied by the battery to the excitation coil through a pair of carbon brushes. If the brushes are worn out, no excitation field is supplied and no output is generated. Replace carbon brush if found worn-out.
  3. Use an analog multitester to check the continuity of the carbon brush and the field coil.

Tripping phenomenon
A.Ifdiesel gensetoperates under rated conditions for a few minutes, the automatic air switch trips, after recloses, then trips a few minutes later with a burning odor.

The cause:
The main contact of the automatic air switch is not well contacted or the spring pressure is insufficient. and the lead-out wire of the switch is not well contacted. The above two reasons will increase the contact resistance of the main circuit of the automatic air switch and cause serious fever, which will lead to the action of the thermal release and lead to wrong tripping.

Methods of resolution:
At this time, we should clean the main contacts of the automatic air switch and flatten them with a fine file or fine sandpaper; Adjust contact spring pressure to make good contact; clean contacts, apply conductive paste if necessary, and lock connection screw.

a voltage regulator that controls the field winding voltages

Did you try the capacitor wired up both ways around? They only go one way and there is no indication as to which on it.

If you still have trouble you need to flash it. Contact us if you need more info on flashing the unit (DO NOT USE A BATTERY OR MAINS TO DO SO!)

The RPM lowered should lower voltage, try it by hand, plug in the volt meter and push the throttle on top of carb with your finger ,should not take much .

squealing either bearing, bushing or winding going or gone if bushings or bearings might be able to repair if not to damaged

You cannot just buy that gasket, but will need to purchase a new Fuel Tap Petcock.

You can purchase it here: http://www.generatorguru.com/northstar/

the unit has gone into over load
The total power requirement has exceed the output of the generator
for example if the generator is a 2.500 kw or kva then it will generate well at 1.8 kva or kw but it will not run forever at 2.5 kva -kw
When a ac is running the power requirement will be constant on the generator and with the fridge as well then the load will be at the maximum out put of the unit.
when the fridge starts again the extra load will exceed the max out put of the generator and it will slow down ( lights dimming ) and eventually go into overload mode
have an accredited electrician calculate your maximum load requirement for an external power supply and then get a unit that is at least 15.. kva kw better that required
generally fridges use 1000watts , ac conditions will draw over 3000watts and any thing else adds up . I am guessing that your generator is only 2500 unit

If it has sat, it may have lost it's rotor residual magnetism. Disconnect the rotor field wires at the AVR or on the exciter/brushes. Note they are polaroty sensitive. Connect a 12V battery to F+ and F- (note polarity) and momentarilly power from the battery for a few seconds. DO NOT forget to disconnect the rotor/exciter field wires first or the voltage regulator will be damaged. If it hasn't sat check voltage regulator, rotor resistance, and stator resistance, and for shorts to ground.

Check for engine lock down due to sitting make sure it is free with plugs out. Check starter solenoid after you make sure battey voltage and battery are good
