Computer shut down unexpectedly and wouldn't start up.
If the laptop just shutdown unexpectedly, it could be that it was overheating. Laptops have a poor cooling system. The Air Intake Duct is located either on the bottom, or side of the laptop. Generally on the bottom, with the Exhaust Duct on the side.
The Air Intake Duct narrows down into a Cooling Tube. Makes a funnel effect for the air coming in. Also, makes a funnel effect for any foreign debris. Foreign debris like Dust, Dirt, Human Hair, Animal Hair, Lint, Food Crumbs, you name it. Doesn't take much, and the cooling capacity of the laptop's cooling system, drops exponentially.
When the cooling system is weakened like this, the processor heats up. The processor must stay within a specific thermal range.
If it heats up beyond this range, it turns off.
No processor, no computer.
A can of compressed air for computers may help alleviate the cooling problem. The AC adapter is removed, (Charger), THEN, the battery is removed. The laptop is held up on it's side, and air is blown into the Air Intake Duct. Use the plastic 'straw' provided.
Come about a finger length away from the Air Intake Duct grill, and shoot air across it in a pattern. Go all the way across, pressing the trigger in all the way. Let go of the trigger once you reach the other side. Go down in rows.
Once you are at the bottom, come back up to the top now, and put the straw right against the grill. This time use short bursts. Press the trigger in all the way, but let go quickly.
You are using short bursts now, because you could spin the little fan inside, too fast. The fan is only designed to spin so fast, and spinning it faster than it was designed for, can lead to premature failure of the fan's bearings.
This usually helps a lot. IF it doesn't, it's time to take it to a pro to clean it. The laptop is opened up, and a physical means, plus compressed air is used.
Both of your laptops, (Kboroughs and browncb), have a key, or keys to press to do a system recovery. If you bought these laptops new, the paperwork will state which key/s to press.
kboroughs, I believe your laptop has to have the battery plugged in, even when you are using the AC adapter, (Charger) Even if the battery is flat. (No charge)
You both, may need to obtain the Restoration Disk, for these laptops. It will have the basic files for your Windows operating system.
DO A REPAIR, not a Fresh Install!
To obtain these, go online to HP.com/Support. On this page click on Contact HP. (Top left corner in Blue)
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html
You will have several options of contact. Email is S-L-O-W!
I suggest you call. (During normal business days, 8-5) Tell the support person you are speaking with, that you need the Restoration Disk for your laptop.
In advance I suggest you write down the serial number of YOUR laptop. It's on the bottom in the Service Tag.
-> s/n is Serial Number.
I called about a Restoration Disk over a year ago. The disk was free. The Shipping and Handling was not.
Then, it was $17 for a 5 to 7 day ship, $24 for a 2 to 3 day ship.
Would appreciate it, if you would rate my answer.
