My printer says...ink cartrage problem

Hello and welcome to FixYa.

I would think in the following flowchart-like manner for such a problem:

Step1: Is the ink cartridge new? ---> If yes, then move on to Step2.
'
-------> If no, then replace the black printer cartridge with a new one.

Step2: Is the ink cartridge an HP original brand? ---> If yes, then move on to Step3.
'
---------------------> If no (only refillable) then replace with an HP brand.

Step3: Did you update the printer drivers lately or your windows in general? ---> If yes, then rollback changes, or re-install previous printer drivers, or latest printer drivers for your OS.
'
--------------------> If no, then please do the same for the printer drivers as this will fix the problem 90% of the time. You can also remove the printer from installed printers and re-install from scratch.

(With reference to technical HP forum posts.)

Overall, this doesn't look like a technical fault of the printer, maybe something's changed in the configuration of it.

Or...

Start with the simplest solution: Just check if the black printer cartridge is properly in place.

Let me know if this was helpful at all.

**Don't forget to vote how helpful this solution was.**

Thanks,

Hp officejet j4580 will not turn on.....yes...all

If possible are you able to check that there is power coming from the transformer? (the big black box in the power cable)
This can be checked by anyone with a MultiMeter.

I don't know how to

The printer was given without a manual because Hp has all of a sudden decided to go green.

anyway if you look on your desktop you will see and icon called the hp solution centre.

Bear in mind that you will only see this software once you have installed the software with the disc that came to you.
Place a document on the scanner glass of your printer face down.
Open the solution centre and you'll have a button called scan picture or scan document click on whichever you want and then select the type of file you want the picture or document scanned as.
once done click on the ok button and the scanning will start.
If you need to scan another picture click on finish and the folder will popup where the scanned file is saved.
If you need to scan another picture or document into the same file at the top you have an option on the scanning window saying add another page click on that, once all the pics or documents are done click on finish and the folder to where the scanned files are saved will open up.
by default the scanning path for WINDOWS XP is in my documents under the folder called my scans.
in WINDOWS VISTA AND WINDOWS 7THE SCANNING PATH IS DOCUMENTS AND THEN A FOLDER CALLED MY SCANS

tell ya what copy and paste the links below and follow the steps and would appreciate four stars if you think I am helpful :)

Hp officejet j4580 print cartridge problem (tri-color)

I discovered on mine, exact same problem, I opened the tray, removed the cartridge, and forced it back in hard and fast. It didn't work the first 12 times but after that, it got a solid connection and it worked. Works fine now. Anyway that's the problem and the problem isn't the cartridge (genuine hp cart here). The problem is on the printer side, the pins that hit the cartridge. Anyway get rough with it, slam it in and out, close the tray, if it doesn't work within 5 seconds, open the tray and do it again. It WILL work.
