I have an HP photosmart C4480. After a paper jam cleared, the printer reported printer cartridge incompatible. This is a replacement cartridge, not from the manufacturer, that prior to the paper jam worked without any problems. How can I get the printer to accept the cartridge and start printing again? The color cartridge is original to the printer and the black cartridge is the "new" one.
Well....I solved the problem......bought a new Canon printer!!
I tried everything...unplugging, cleaning everything that was mentioned above. I was onto HP online support several time, but they were absolutely no help at all...they basically told me that the cartridge must be damaged or ink dried up and to buy a new cartridge to see if the error persisted.....I don't think so!!!
I will never by HP again after having issues with the last two I have had. I love my new Canon printer it is EVERYTHING that HP wasnt.

How do I realign my printer? Whenever I print a document it comes out crooked?
To align the print cartridges from the HP Photosmart Software
1. Load letter or A4 unused plain white paper into the input tray.
NOTE: If you have colored paper loaded in the input tray when you align the print
cartridges, the alignment will fail. Load unused plain white paper into the input
tray, and then try the alignment again.
2. In the HP Solution Center, click Settings.
3. In the Print Settings area, click Printer Toolbox.
NOTE: You can also open the Printer Toolbox from the Print Properties dialog
box. In the Print Properties dialog box, click the Features tab, and then click
Printer Services.
NOTE: You can also open the Printer Toolbox from the Print Properties dialog
box. In the Print Properties dialog box, click the Features tab, and then click the
Printer Services button.
The Printer Toolbox appears.
4. Click the Device Services tab.
5. Click Align the Print Cartridges.
When prompted, ensure plain white letter or A4 paper is loaded in the input tray, then
press the button next to OK.
NOTE: If you have colored paper loaded in the input tray when you align the print
cartridges, the alignment will fail. Load unused plain white paper into the input
tray, and then try the alignment again.
The product prints a print cartridge alignment sheet.
7. Load the page print side down on the right front corner of the glass, and then press
the button next to OK to scan the page.
When the On button stops flashing, the alignment is complete and the page can be
removed. Recycle or discard the page.

I bought an office depot cartridge for my printer but if wont print as it recognizes that the cartridge is counterfeit
When you get an HP 61 /
61XL integrated ink cartridge refilled (i.e. currently offered at Costco or
Frys today) or if you buy a remanufactured/compatible HP ink cartridge, the ink
levels cannot be reset (HP has a smart chip embedded within the nozzle plate at
base of ink cartridge which counts the drops and then registers as
empty).....so you'll just need to live with it and ignore 'ink low', 'non-genuine',
'counterfeit' messages and similar while you are using these types of
aftermarket supplies. The first video below provides an overview of this 'low
ink' phenomena.
Additionally, severe cartridge errors (i.e. Incompatible cartridges, Black/Color
cartridge(s) problem / Cartridge not intended for this printer, etc.) typically
indicate the internal micro-electronics of the HP 61 cartridge are electrically
damaged. The cartridges electrical wire runs at rear and lower side of the ink
cartridge are very delicate and are somewhat susceptible to ink attack over
time, which can lead to premature failures. In addition, the older the
cartridge the higher the chance of an internal electrical failure due to
prolonged ink exposure and subsequent circuit corrosion. I suggest you run a Tap 41 diagnostic test to
check cartridges electrical health (this is a forced service test so the
printer will attempt to send whether cartridges are good or not); Refer to

All of a sudden my HP Photosmart C4480 doesn't want to scan anymore. I get the message:
Scan error. Try scan from Computer or see documentation. Press OK.
Thanks for your help!
Maria
Please try "Scanners and Cameras" which comes with Windows to see if you can scan images successfully from your scanner.

scan error try scan from computer or see documentation Press ok!!!
There are two ways to make your printer scan.
You can tell it to scan by pressing the keys on the front of the printer
OR
You can tell it to scan by using the software that came with your printer that is installed in your computer.
Your error message is saying that you are trying to scan by pressing the button on your printer and you have not set up this option yet. It is saying to check your documentation for instructions on how to set up this option if you wish to use it or try scanning using the software in your computer instead.
Go ahead and press "ok", if you have not done so already to clear the print que.
Then what I need to know from you is which option above do you want to use to initiate a scan from your printer?
In order to scan using the keys on your printer, you need to have an application (software) installed on your computer that it can recognize and send the image to. The printer will send the image to just about any graphics or photo editing software and others like Microsoft Word, or the photosmart software that came on your driver disk.
Make sure you have one or more of the above software titles installed on your computer, then press the "scan" button on the printer. The first time you set it up, you will see a message that says something similar to "gathering applications list" please wait. That means that your printer is connecting to your computer and checking for software that it recognizes and will scan to. Once a program is located it will then ask you where you want to send the image to and give you a list of acceptable applications it found installed. You use the up and down arrow keys on the printers keyboard to scroll the list until you see the one you wish to use then press the "ok" or "enter" key. Then just follow the prompts on your printers display and it will scan and send the image to your computer screen.
Using the keys on the printer is tougher to learn then scanning through the software on your pc.
If you want to try scanning by using the software, follow these instructions below:
Install the software that came with your printer on the driver installation disk. If you don't have the software or disk you can download a copy of the program from HP's website (http://www.hp.com). Look for downloads and then enter your printer make and model and follow the instructions to download and install on your pc.
Once the software is installed, turn on your printer and insert the document or photo you want to scan. Then open the program on your pc and click on the "scan" option (choose scan document, or scan picture or scan mixed ect.).
The pc will send the scan command to your printer, it will warm up and then send a copy of the image to your computer screen and ask if it is acceptable. If it is, choose "accept" and it will save a copy of the image file on your computer and stop. Double click on the image to open it for editing ect. Once you are happy with the finished product, click on "file" and then choose "save as" and pick a place that you will remember for easy locating then name the image and close it.
If you have any questions or encounter problems with the instructions above, just come back to this question and send me your concers through the "comment" section and I will help you solve this.
Click on the "Scan" option
