Smoke came out of my laptop
Electronics work on "blue smoke", release the blue smoke and they stop working. Kidding aside, As I'm sure you have already figured out, only use a Cord/charger with the EXACT same power specs. I would have a chat with the Radio Shack salesperson A.S.A.P., explaining to the person the cost of his miscalculation and your displeasure with the outcome. You may want to up-the-ante by talking to the Manager and contacting the Radio Shack Company by Email or Phone. Keep all email, documents and dates. Be persistent, become a "thorn-in-there-side". Until you get a result you are happy with. As to the machine, does it work at all? Or has the board been "smoked", leaving it useless? If so, your better off buying another and using that, keep all receipts, to settle your grievance with Radio Shack. I have used this strategy with MANY major companies. Sometimes the Magic works, sometimes it doesn't. If you are persistant enough, using a polite but firm stance, backed up by documentation, you may get a replacement or compensated. It's up to you. Most people just give up and absord the loss, saying " I don't have time for this, it's only a few hundred dollars", that's what major companies depend on. Radio Shack/Tandy is a major company, and has been around for a long time, Remind them of that and there Customer Service, often in your correspondence. Or you can"Blow it off" and buy a new machine. It's your choice.
