One side of the printer will not close
The hinge underneath could be broken the only way to fix this is to remove the plastic hinge.. You will need to unplug the printer and examine it, the broken hinge is likely to be impeding the lid from closing,

Why a black image when I scan?
The only things I can think of besides a mechanical failure is that
somehow your brightness and contrast settings got messed up or your
scan area has been reduced to a black area of the picture. What size
are the resulting files that come out all black?

Paper jam
Here are some useful
steps you can try:
try to power cycle the printer for about 2
mins. then try a test print with just single paper
Make sure that
the paper is aligned properly.
You can also check if there's any
foreign object stuck inside the printer
If you are able to reach
the paper roller on the printer, try cleaning it.
Lastly turn
off you printer, try to lift your printer up, put it in an upside down
position
then shake it from left to right for about a min. then turn
the printer on again
try a test print.
If none of this steps
resolved the problem
then the issue is with the printer itself.
Hope
this helps.

Change text size on printed
Welcome to FixYa.
The text size of your printed document depends on what application you use to create/open/edit the document. Let's say you are using the popular Microsoft Word, all you have to do is:
- highlight the text(s)
- right click on the highlighted text
- select FONT
- a dialog box will come up where you have the option to modify the text size
Keep me posted.

Printer message cover open
There is no replacement part available from Dell. Temporary fix is removing the hinge spring under the small concave white plastic piece (you can remove that also) allows the cover to close. The nub under the cover has to press a "lid closed" switch which is not possible if the lid hinge is broken.

Is there a way to refill the cartridges yourself
I tried more than once, and it does not work because the chip continues to treat the cartridge as empty no matter what. If you have one black and one color cartridge in your printer, the printer will draw from whatever cartridge still had ink left in it before you refilled it. Therefore, the chip does not allow it to draw from the one new cartridge. I have heard that there are ways to override this, but it more than likely would be damaging to your printer eventually. You also would no longer have any accurate means of knowing how much ink you have remaining. Major pain. Places like Cartridge World need to not advertise that all printers can be refilled.
