Cable boxes can latch up from time to time. It can be from a momentary poer loss or poor ventilation or any number of things. Try pulling the plug on your cable box for about 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for it to reboot. If this does not correct the problem, contact your cable provider and ask them to send a reset signal to your box. I hope this was helpful, best wishes.

Humming noise when tv is on or off
sounds like the power supply. In most cases its nothing to get to worried about. Do you have a surge protecter or a power conditioner hooked up to it?? this could help. Try to unplug it overnight and see if it will stop.
Comment back to let let me know how it goes or to get any information on power supplys or power conditioners.
A little banner that says
It's not your TV, it's your cable box. 2.4.6-19 is the HDTV program. Just turn the cable box off for 10 seconds.

My TV image went blank, but the TV stayed on. What
The exact model number is necessary to determine the exact parts your TV has. Some models has suffixes in their numbers to indicate they have some differences in their parts. For example, the 42LG30 is different from 42LG30DC, 42LG30-UD and so on. But generally, there are three parts that has a direct connection with the dimming and illumination of the screen. These are the T-CON board or LCD driver, backlight and inverter or ballast. The T-CON board is responsible in driving the LCD panel to produce the appropriate video or image. The inverter or ballast provides power to the backlights to illuminate the screen. If one of these fails, you will not be able to see any image or video on your screen.
The T-CON board is bad when there's a glow on your screen indicating that the backlight is on but there's no video or image. In short, the screen is blank.
If the screen is black, no glow, grab a torch and shine it on your screen. You will be able to see a faint image if the T-CON board is good. This indicates that the backlight is off. Either the inverter/ballast is dead or the backlight itself is busted. But usually it's the inverter/ballast that has failed. You can tell that the backlight is busted if the TV is old enough that the mercury vapor inside the tubes has depleted.
The T-CON board and the inverter or ballast are not serviceable and must be replaced completely if faulty. Replacing these boards can easily be done. Feel free to inform me if you find which of the above is the root of the problem to guide you in the fix.
Do I need the hdmi cable connected between the sky
To get the best quality of picture & certainly if you have High Definition then the HDMI connector is vital. If you are on normal sky transmission the a Scart from the sky box to the TV will be sufficient.
I have a picture, but no sound.
Let verify first to narrow down to where the problem can be. First, check the on screen sound set up menu to make sure the speakers are not set to OFF. If the setting is OK, then attach the powered PC speakers to the Audio Line out RCA jacks to see if you can get the sound there, if you do, then the problem can be in the power amp circuits, if you do not get the sound at RCA jacks, then the problem can be in the sound processor circuit. Please post back what you find.
Remote control quit working, changed batteries,
You might want to see if you can get a Universal Remote that will program to the correct code to operate that tv. If that still doesn't work - it could be that the infrared receiver in the tv went bad? Then you'd be going to the repair shop to have it checked out. You might do that anyway and they can tell you for sure ... if your remote really went bad, or if the problem is in the tv.
