U have sound so it could be either the T con board - video only issues or your backlighting (inverter board). If set has slight light in a dark room I would go with the t con board.

Of course, anything is fixable. But on a large screen set such as yours the cost of repair is prohibitive. Better off getting a new set with warranty for the same or less dinero since prices have really come down. Don't know if Samsung is still making plasma sets. I know that Panasonic dropped out and LG and Samsung were supposed to do so also- shame because plasma sets have always had better pictures than other sets. But hey were not selling as well and the almighty dollar has once again prevailed. .........

two simple things to do:Does set have sound when a DVD etc is connected to a rear audio/video input? This will rule some things in or out.In the main menu somewhere are the speakers (internal ones) switched to off or external?

The noise was likely a blown capacitor and there may be an unusual odor like an electrical fire. Do not worry the TV should not be a fire risk but will require a repair person to replace the capacitor and check internal fuse, etc. If you have recently had a lightning storm you can inquire with your insurance agent to see if they offer coverage for the damage. Based on age of TV it may be cheaper to buy a new replacement than to repair the TV. Generally if TV Is more than 4 years old you will want to buy a new one but it will cost much less than the original purchase when you buy new.
