Sony ICF-CDK50 Clock Radio Questions & Answers
The lithium battery has been
The battery is not making proper connections and this is a global problem with many of this model Sony stereo. Two things you can do, really, 3. One is take it to a repair depot that fixes Sony. #2 is you can take out the battery and it's holder, and remove about 1/4" of the battery housing that surrounds the battery, at the end that slides furthest into the stereo (allowing an open runway for battery connection). If the connection prongs are not bent out of shape, it should allow much better contact. #3, and this will void your warranty, is to fix the connection prongs which I feel are of a 'whimpy' material (not to mention they made the battery holder incorrectly). I opened up my stereo, undid the 2 screws that held down the small board with the battery connecting prongs, and CAREFULLY straightened them out full length and made sure they were both bent towards the battery so the battery would slide easily and make good connection. Test this with a battery (watch polarity) while the radio is apart. The flashing battery symbol should go out (I did not even need to push any buttons, but you can do this as well). Once you have the prongs just right, make sure you make that change to the battery holder (to allow great contact on the battery in the holder) and then (while case still open) further test you have connection by inserting the battery in the holder, putting the holder in the stereo and seeing that connection is made. Then put it all back together once you are sure you have connection. It is a pity Sony did not make this rather valuable contribution to the stereo much better, a backup battery compartment is not rocket science.
Fm reception
If there is no FM Antenna connection you can try to move the power cord to different positions and see if you get a better signal. If not then move the unit closer to a window or try various locations that might have better reception.
The cd player doesn't play
In most cases when the CD does not play it is possible that the optical head is a suspect. Sometimes it might pick up ordinary audio CD but will not play other formats. This indicates that the optical head is weak and so there is no detection or scanning of the CD . If the optical is working the tracks will be read immediately but with no scanning the laser head can be defective.
The main motor will not work in some cases as unless the tracks are read the drive motor will not work with signal from the processor. Also in some cases the central motor base can shift and so the distance to the disc can be more resulting in low detection. You can pull up the spindle to come closer. Sometimes certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it will not be read and so will reject. Hence it is ideal to manually clean the laser head eye using a cleaning swap /cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.If there is no result then watch if the CD spins or tries to spin. If so the board seems to work unless a test is taken on the main board but the possibility of a defective optical head can be the suspected fault. If any of the above seems otherwise we must recheck with possibilities of a malfunction of the main processor board
Thank you for using Fixya
My am station is not coming in
The solution is to toss it because it can't be corrected. I gave up on mine after a month and threw it away. Somebody should have told the genius that designed this radio that a kitchen cannot be rotated to achieve a radio signal. Maybe a way to rotate the internal antenna or a way to connect an external antenna would be helpfull. So much for technology. When you pay a premium for a respected name like Sony, you expect more. I replaced it with a cheap Coby at less than half the price and it works fine
