Most likely that the batteries are drained (depleted). Change the MAIN batteries (AAA), then chnage the backup battery. Avoid letting the calculator go with main and backup batteries removed.

Strange. The calculator comes with a Getting Started manual. In any event you can download an electronic copy from education.ti.com.From the associated icon of the calculator, I surmise that you have TI Nspire without the CAS (Computer Algebra System). Unfortunately, this version of the Nspire cannot perform symbolic algebra. It will use the distributive property by itself if you feed it expressions without letter symbols. If you type in expressions with symbols, all symbols must have a value stored in them. The exception is instances where you are trying to solve an equation (or a systems of linear equations).

I am using Window XP.
In the clamshell or the box the calculator came in, there is a CD. Use it to install the drivers and the TI Nspire Computer Link software. If it came with the TINspire CX student software you can install that too.
After that you can hook the calculator to the computer and run the TI Nspire Computer Link software or the Student/Teacher Software and it it will probe the USB port and find your calculator.

Lines running through screen; hard to read
If you have lines running through the screen that don't move regardless of what is being done on the calculator, then the screen is most likely broken. This can happen from an external shock like dropping it, or sitting on it. It can also be caused by the calculator being bent.
Sorry for the bad news.

It is very likely that when you change the angle unit, you are not saving the changes made.
After
you finish changing settings, use the TAB key repeatedly to move
cursor towards the OK button at the bottom. If you do not confirm
changes by clicking OK, they will be lost.
You can also make the changes the default ones by clicking the Make Default option.

I have fixed several TI calculators for a school that had loose or corroded battery contacts. Cleaning the contacts and bending them a bit to get a good grip on the batteries got them going. You can try this on yours and see if you have any luck. Also try another set of batteries on the off chance one of the new ones you installed is bad (it does happen, and isn't one of the first things you'd think to check) or use a battery tester. If the batteries are good and the calculator still doesn't work, something inside has failed. Either go for the refurb or (if that specific model isn't required for school) see what similar brands and models are available. There might be something suitable for less than the TI price.

My TI-nspire isn't graphing correctly.
Hi,
According to your problem, first check the battery status or
replace the battery. It may occur for battery. You need a software and firmware
update for this calculator. Reinstallation of software and an update of
firmware will solve your problem.

Calculator will not turn on.
Hi,
Here are some steps which you can try, one might work for you.
- First thing that you have to check is the battery of the calculator, it might be low of charge already.
- Check if you have the "Reset" hole at the back of it, use a pin or a ballpen point to reset it.
- You can try to give 3-4 good tap at the back of the calculator using your palm, sometimes this gets the calculator work again.
- Also try to notice the LCD screen if you get a faint display when lighted. Sometimes this is caused by low battery charge or failing LCD screen.
Hope this helps.

I am describing the procedure for the CAS with OS version 2.1 But it should work for your calculator.
- Turn calculator ON
- Press The HOME (House icon) button.
- Press digit key 5 to open Settings and status.
- In menu options, select [2:Settings]
- Use the arrow (right) to open the submenu options and select [1:General]
- The
cursor should be on drop down box labeled Display Digits
- Use
down arrow to open the number display format, and select Float 6 (an
appropriate choice most of the time. If you want more digits, set Float
12)
- Press [ENTER] or Click to validate your selection.
- The drop down box will close.
- Use the TAB button to move to another Configuration setting. Pressing the TAB twice will take you to Exponential format.
- Use down arrow to unfold the Exponential format menu.
- If you do not need Scientific Format, use Normal and validate.
- Press TAB several times until cursor reaches OK.
- At this point Press ENTER to save Configuration.
- This should solve the problem.
As
I said, this describes the procedure for OS version 2.1. Once you find
out how to enter the setting screen, do as I described above, and do
not forget to validate by getting the cursor on OK and validate.

Hello,
I have a problem
There is a major bug in the 3.0 OS which does permanently brick TI-Nspire calculators on the 2nd booting of the new OS.
It has been reported for over a week all around the world - check here: http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?topic=7943.0
It's impossible to repair without a special external hardware. You've got to contact TI-Cares and ask for a replacement calculator.
TI has just removed OS 3.0 from its servers today. This should have been done much sooner...
