What does the LAN do on the modem

There are two halves to a router. The internet (WAN) side a local network (LAN) side. The term WAN means Wide Area Network and generally refers to the internet. The term LAN means Local Area Network. That would be for the computers that are in your office or home. The LAN connects your computer to your printers or to other computers. I hope that answers your question!

We recently upgraded our iphones. Since then we are having truoble with our internet connection randomly disconnecting some of the devices being used.

If the WIFI security encryption for the WIFI password isn't in what's called "WPA2-ONLY", sometimes there will be random disconnects. By default, I think the encryption is "WPA+WPA2 mix mode" which can be the source of disconnects. You will find this in your router's settings which you can access by navigating to what's called the default gateway IP in any web browser. Commonly, it is 192.168.0.1, but can be 192.168.1.1, or even 192.168.2.1. It will ask you for a username and password if you've done it correctly. It might say on the router what the username and password is, or you can find the default login credentials online for all common routers. Login, then find some kind of "security" tab, maybe under wireless, or WLAN, or something like that. It will give you an encryption option for the wireless network and password, and choose the WPA2-ONLY option. Save or apply the settings, and your router will reset and hopefully you won't have any more disconnect issues.

Netgear 3300 does it work as a wireless repeater?

http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/netgear-wndr3300-rangemax-dual/4505-3319_7-32863752.html sounds like that router isn't really well liked. I do not recommend using wireless repeaters because your "second" network is only as good as the uplink to it, and I find you often can't move the repeater too far from the first router without sacraficing a lot of quality. plus that router has bad range to start from what I hear

Wireless disconnects while wired cpu thats connected to router still connected

Try setting the router to a higher channel. Many cordless land line phones broadcast (up to a mile away) in the default channel and cause this issue.
