The REALLY nice part about 1996 AirConditioners...
They most LIKELY use R134A refrigerant (NON-CFC still reasonably priced (even in CALIFORNIA ))...

Just like REFRIGERATORS.. pretty straight forward.

- low voltage contactor SWITCHES LINE VOLTAGE
direct to the starter capacitors & the Compressor

>> Check your LINE VOLTAGES first.

>> Check your transformer voltages SECOND.

>> Check you wire CONNECTIONS: after 22 years
of service... those contacts can fail and simply need
to be cleaned and RETERMINATED.

>> Check the CONTACTOR switch to assure
LINE VOLTAGE is present on ALL contacts.
(most contactors can be MANUALLY operated

USE a quality lube to soften those joints and GENTLY
remove any burned contacts. PROPERLY strip... and
use ANTI-OXIDENT compound (sparingly) on ALL
mating surfaces before REASSEMBLY...

You can do this:

First, I'm not a Carrier Tech.
* Check warranty and call for service.
*** Following is for information only ***
* I found a simple (but technical) video on you tube;

* Error chart on the web; https://removeandreplace.com/2017/08/11/carrier-split-system-air-conditioner-error-codes-and-troubleshooting/

* Haven't found the specific code "10". It could be an older code for a discontinued model. Or is this for a HVAC (Insustrial) unit? Could use the model #'s for specific information.
* Call for service as you will still need a certified tech to check.

Walking by it can cause it to turn on sometimes. That little door switch could be causing your issue too. Does the equipment run without trouble? Obviously there are other problems that may be causing it, ut that's the simplest one to check. tape it tight and see
