Loads of people are complaining about 5.1 not working in windows 7. I have not managed to get it working since 7 came out. All i have done is ticked "Speaker Fill" so all speakers work but its not true 5.1. Maybe some day microsoft will sort it but i doubt it.

I had that happen before when my RAM went bad. I think I shorted it out by not having it clicked in all the way, I don't remember. Maybe try swapping some RAM out one at a time and see what happens. Make sure the RAM is also in its right spots (like if you have 4 slots there is one in slot 1 and not in slot 3) I hope this helps.

Have you checked the device manager to ensure that the drivers are correct? Sometimes there are several different audio chipsets used on boards requiring different drivers. You could also remove the drivers and if running Windows run a windows update to see if it chooses a correct driver. Failing that see if there are any applications that need installing or that are installed that take precedence over Windows managing the hardware.
