First of all, forget about using the built-in memory...it's very small. Does your camera work properly when a memory card is inserted? You could also go into the setup menu to "reset". That would set your camera back to factory defaults.

Enter "setup" mode, and switch from "picture" or "video" to "panoramic". Take a picture, move the camera, and take another picture. Follow the on-screen instructions when you have finished taking the segments.

put memory card in

Since you said it makes noise when you turn it on, the gear system controlling the lens might be faulty. have it checked.

you may try some card recovery software, recommended asoftech photo recovery that helped me before.http://www.asoftech.com/apr/If needed, you may do a quick format of the card, and then use asoftech photo recovery to recover files.

There is a strong likelihood it has received a knock and the screen back light is broken. Easiest solution i can suggest is to pop it on ebay and buy another. It would be worth trying to find your way through the menu and making sure screen brightness isnt off or on auto.
