There's little in free information available regarding 997 DTC errors other than the handful in the owners manual.The only two temperature sensors I find in the wiring diagram are engine and transmission and only the transmission temperature interrupts the PTO so I believe the "start thermal protection" is a hydrostat pump overheat state and shutting down the PTO is their way to protect the pump.My only suggestion is make sure the hydro pump is clean and clear of debris and service the hydro, new filter and replace fluid.

Its on google just found it just put in john deere 777 mower belt track it shows how it goes once you see it its simple to install , you may find it on u tube . I changed my belt bit of a hair pull but once you see it .Its easy .

With the mower turned OFF check the blades to see if they aren't bent and if it spins freely. There should be resistance when you hand turn the blades. A bent blade can jam and lock up the drive system. If the blade spins freely and has no resistance check the drive belts from the blade pulley to the gears that run the blades. Hopefully you have just had a drive belt come loose or break, a reasonably cheap and easy fix. If the belts are OK you will need a mower mechanic to look at the gearing for the blades.

Wiring diagram shows fuse F5 20 Amp "Switched Power" feeds rear PTO switch.

check the clutch. sounds like it is out.

Check the resistance of the PTO clutch winding with the PTO power cable disconnected. It should read 2 - 4 ohms.

The engine does not need to be running for PTO to engage but all safeties must be operational.

I believe the red led ON indicates the PTO clutch relay is (should be) energized. So if the red led is off then the PTO relay is not energized hence no power to the clutch. Check all fuses. You need to test your way back from the PTO switch to the PTO relay, through the safeties.

Yes it will, but you will probably find that the seat switch is faulty and that is why it was bypassed. :>)

Your question is convoluted... is it a no crank or a no spark or both? Both, implies brake switch but can be other.

I find no detailed free wiring diagrams so I can answer only in general.

For engine crank, most ZTR mowers require brake ON, PTO OFF, and both steering arms OUT (ground drive neutral), then ignition switch to start position. Some ZTRs require operator in seat in addition.

As for spark... engine ignition kill shunt circuit will close to battery negative (frame ground) when ignition switch is in the off position, otherwise open at ignition switch. Safety circuits operate in parallel to the ignition switch.

When ignition switch is not in the off position, the following safety circuit conditions will close the kill shunt.

1. PTO on and operator not in seat.
2. Brake on and either steering arm out. (Most but not all ZTRs).

The incomplete diagrams I find show a relay that powers the starter solenoid so verify relay not energizing and trace back through safety circuits. A simple inexpensive automotive test lamp would be a useful tool for troubleshooting.
