What is a sewage suction truck? What functions does it have?
The sewage suction truck is a tanker adapted to emptying cesspits and the like for people who aren't connected to mains drainage.
The pump doesn't actually move the sewage - the pump creates a partial vacuum in the tanker so when the main valve is opened atmospheric pressure being greater then blows the sewage into the tanker.
A tanker of similar design is used as a gully emptier - typically roadside drains that after a dry summer become blocked with dirt, leaves and litter so a flood is likely when the rain starts. The cast iron grid is removed and a close fitting suction pipe is dropped into the drain, the pump is started and shortly after the main valve is opened and the drain is clear.
This type of special tanker usually carries a tank of water so cleared drains can be hosed to provide a clean and tidy appearance for the taxpayer.
They are unglamorous vehicles and not nice to be closely involved with but they provide an essential contribution to a hygienic world.
The workers of the sewage tanker are at some risk of infection and generally have a priority pass to medical aid should they need it.
