Very likely you now have 2 problems. First, the timer has "failed", and is not advancing. That should require a new or used timer. Those are available many places, such as "Sears Parts Direct" (this web site will give you the part number of the part you will need), Amazon, or e-bay. Next, you may or may not need some part that will let the dryer heat. There could be one of about 6 or 8 parts that have failed, each one will need to be checked with an electric meter to find that faulty one. You dryer belt may be shot and a piece of rubber is missing making it jump while working. Needs replacing before it completely quits. It will eventually just break apart.

Unplug, remove the screws at lint trap, do not drop in trap! Press in on the clips at the front edge approximately and inch in from each side, lift top. Remove the screws on the inside of front pane;, unplug door switch, tilt front forward and lift the front off. The idler pulley (what you are calling tensioner ) slips in the slots in front of the motor. It may be the centrifugal switch on the motor. The push button starts the motor and as the motor spins up to speed the centrifugal switch closes to keep the motor running. Hope this helps.

Have you tested the voltage at the dryer terminal block? Left stud to the rht stud should read 240 vac. both outside to center should be 120vac. Follow the path of electricity on the diagram. thermals fuse open? Wires cut to door switch? Being that the timer drive motor is humming ,you are getting at least 120vac to the dryer ,but possible not 240vac. Model# ??

I have no idea what dryer your talking about due to the fact that there is no model number posted! most dryers have two thermal fuses which can be found in the diagram. The timer can be at fault with a contact not closing. Diagram again! Motor switch could be at fault, closes heat circuit after motor starts. Diagram again! dDont throw parts at it until you verify the cause, you have spent enough already.

Why would you want to bypass a thermostat? Without it the unit will just continue to heat until it burns out

It sounds like the heat element is bad. It is touching its metal housing causing it to be grounded. It is supplied with 120 volts so it will stay on. You will need to replace the heat element. In the mean time unplug it or turn the breaker off.
