My external hard drive is

Hello

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.

Kind Regards
Andrea

COMPUTER DOES NOT RECOGNIZE HARD DRIVE...HELP

Hello Sir, hi, If a PC does not recognize your external hard drive, you need first to check if the USB port is working, to check simply plug another USB device such as flash drive, if the port is fine, check to see if the USB port is a version 1.1 or a version 2.0, and look if your external hard drive is compatible or does it needs a DEVICE DRIVER, A USB 2.0 device may work on a USB 1.1, just reduced speed, and last try to see if your PC is the problem and not the Hard drive, have your Hard drive plug on another PC, visit a friend and check if you could use his or her PC to see if your hard drive is bad. Now if you find your hard drive is bad, its either the Interface circuit OR the physical hard disk itself. You can check your hard disk, simply disassemble the unit and gain access to the hard disk. either SATA or IDE, plain Hard disk plug it on your PC. see if you can access the disk. If yes back up your files. your Interface circuit at this point is bad. If your hard drive is bad, buy a new hard drive, as your replacement. keep me posted

Model HD160U2E5-72 s/n A0575461 is dead

Remove the actual hard drive from the case. Purchase a new external usb case for the drive. You can find them on the web from 7 to 29 dollars. Make sure you buy the right case for the drive 2.5 or 3.5 inch E-IDE or SATA ect. Install the hard drive from the old unit in the new case and you should be back on the road in no time.. Hope this was helpful....

Installing old drive into new drive

If the problem is in the controller inside the case which in 99 percent of the times it is, This will certainly fix your problem. The MTBF(mean time between failure) of harddrives is 100,000 hours of operation. Also, any external case can be used that matches your hard drives specs...size, IDE, SATA ect...

Hope this helps you,

Missing power cable and

Any 12 volt dc 750ma+ power adapter will work.Install the right plug on the end for your external drive. You can go to radioshack and they will have the proper end for your drive. You have to make sure the polarity is right though as it's direct current. The tip or center must be positive. I recommend testing this with a volt meter before plugging it into your drive to ensure proper polarity. I hope this helps you.

External hard drive

It sounds like your hard drive is damaged my friend. Hard drives are very, very dilicate pieces of machinary. The disk is paper thin and any sudden jarring, especiaiy dropping it creates a warp in the drive. Unplug it to prevent further damage. Don't worry in many cases you can have the data retrieved from your hard drive by using this online company that I highly recommend:

My computer has ceased to recognize the drive.

this is cont. from my post on the previous issue.

I went as far as reloading windows on my pc to see if the problem was my pc did not help.
I now have a 500GB exteranl hard drive the pc is working fine with it so I know the problem is in the acomdata drive.

I think the key is a different manufacturer it so far is working fine.
I am bummed out the acomdata only lasted about 2 to 3 weeks before I had a problem or noticed i had a problem. Should I try to format the drive would this help?

Cannot delete files from Acomdata 160 hd

what is the error message you are getting? what OS are you using?

What type of files are you trying to delete?

I will assume the most popular answers.
If you are running windows and trying to delete files and getting the error that the file is a system file or in use and cannot be deleted, then you need to get a utility called move on boot...it will move or delete files when you are rebooting your computer, before they are in use.
You can find move on Boot by google search and many other free utilities that do the same thing.
I would make sure these files aren't needed as yo could kill windows easily.

Virus and spyware removal often requires this sort of removal.

Hope that helps,
