If you are getting a blue screen while trying to play back a tape that you know has a recording on it then its gonna be 1 of 2 things, No.1 your video heads have gotten dirty and you need to get a cleaning tape to run through the tape path to clean the unit, or No2 if your cleaning it doesnt help then you are going to need to have the video heads replaced. Usually once the heads are replaced they check the alignments for you as well and do a proper cleaning. I hope this helps

You could try slaving the camera out to an external screen if you have the cables, you should find a RCA output socket on the camera marked video out (commonly known as a phono)normally yellow also a couple of audio out sockets one red and one white.
If you plug the yellow one into an external monitor you will see if it's the camera LCD screen that faulty.
Also check the iris is not turned down when playing back or recording this can happen if the camera is set to manual.
Set the camera to automatic and try again.
It sounds to me that the iris is closed, if the head drum is spinning you should get something even if it's random signal noise denoting clogged heads anyway the camera would flash up a clogged head icon so first as check the iris.

Well it can be a bit of a "Mission" Here's what I would do. OK, The BEST way is to get a TV/Video Input card or USB Dongle. And DVR software, usually this comes with the unit. Or use Dscaler, (Link below) the BEST video recording program out there. Anyway, Hook up the Camcorder, to the Video Input on TV/Video Input device .Open up the recording software, and then "Play" the "Tape" then, start the "DVR" Recording. Save the streamed Video as a MPEG4 or whatever you wish to save in. Then you have a Digital recording of what was on the tape, safely stored as a "Movie" on your computer. You can then use Movie making software to digitally manipulate the Video's as you wish. You could then simply copy the movie to the Flash card, or copy/paste from the recorded location on PC, to the flash card, via a Flash card reader.
Some camcorders, have a Firewire, Or USB, built into them. IF you wish to use this method, then you would need to download and install "Driver" software First, and than, you can do more or less the same as above, simply selecting THAT Input, as the Video Stream, again, Play the "Tape" and it outputs via the Cable to the PC, and DVR, software. Again, you can do as you wish with the flash drive.
Below, is the canon link for the software you need for your camera. Also download the manual and follow the instructions in there it will help you. Below that is the Dscaler DVR. (Another good one is KMPlayer)
